Just noticed that there is some sort of ranking thing now on my homepage, and wondering what the heck that's about. Anyone here know and want to help a poor confused Tyche figure out why LJ suddenly decided ranking journals was a good idea and what the basis of the rankings are

Go to LJ maintenance for a description but the bottom line is the US is now integrated with Cyrillic services which has the ranking. I dont care. But it means Lj is now more like google and facebroke as far as tracking is concerned. If you have firefox and know what you are doing you can remove it using a add on called rip.

Of all journals on LJ, that's where you rank. What is odd is rank is really meaningless unless you are selling something..

...How weird. And utterly intimidating. I'm pretty sure my "ranking" is wrong. I'm not looking at that anymore.

You can turn it off. It's in your account settings under 'privacy'.

The ratings feature had been on for the journals opted into cyrillic servies for a long time. Seems like they now also made it available for all the other journals too.
I don't know which actions all count in the rating; at least I noticed, even if some people visit you every day, you already climb up in the social capital rating as well as in the pageviews rating (if they visit your journal a lot).

I don't know, but since this thing had been switched on, I visibly get more visitors on my territory.
So, I can't complain.
