A number of people have expressed concern over comments I have made in a previous post about Real Person Slash so I have done some research and have come to the following conclusion ( Read more... )

Actually, this looks weird here, but I really wasn't sure, especially since I know that you were still busy running things up. But I was wondering if there is going to be any way of importing/ exporting journal entries AND comments to the new site? Because so far, there have been links to liz_marcs and brown_betty's tutorials on how to import entries and memories, but nothing on preserving comments yet. As far as I know, only wordpress has been able to allow for comments importing so far, but I'm wondering if something similar can be done for scribblit, since it uses a similar code to LJ (and maybe might be easier to code)?

I'm just thinking that something like this would probably help make the transition easier for people who do want to move to scribblit, but might not because they've already moved to a new site.

Honestly, I'm not into that sort of programming so I would have no idea how to do it. I am sure that it can be done because you can back up comments but I wouldn't know how to set it up to import/export them. Sorry. :(

Would you like someone(namely:me) to post a pimp for programmers to look into this on fandom_flies?

OK, status report:right now there are two programs that I'm aware of that backup comments:LJArchive, and LJDump- the second is reported to have some issues with it.

I think it will be worth your time to get in contact with ljarchive which is the LJArchive developer community and ask them for help- I don't feel comfortable contacting them as I'm not a programmer and probably won't be able to give them the level of detail they may need about the site, as well as feeling I'm taking credit you're due.

Actually someone commented in one of my posts saying they would be willing to work on ljArchive to make it compatible with Scribblit. I don't know where the comment is exactly (which is probably not surprising) but it is there. :P

Good.Only you'd better reply to them to make sure they know you want that program, and that a way to import comments across journaling systems would be much appreciated.I'd do it myself but I won't know where to begin.

I did reply to them about having it done but not about importing comments. I'll go through the post again - I know which one it was on - the "BIG" one - I just don't remember the username. LOL

I agree that this would be a major boon for getting people to Scribbit, which as a proud Beta tester I totally support!

Perhaps among the coding volunteers someone could figure out a way to export posts en mass from LJ and redeposit them on Scribblit with comments? I realize it would be difficult but they'd be a god in the blogging universe... ^_^

*goes to play with her Scribs layout* (Yeah, I gave it a nick...) ~_^

This is something that is beyond HTML, JavaScript or Perl even. Well maybe not perl but it's not any perl I know so it would be a rather large initiative I believe for something like this to happen.

The problem with importing comments is that they're user-specific--and those users might not exist on the new site.

However, maybe something could be done to allow them all to be posted as a single comment (or group of comments, for long sets) that include a username (and ideally, a link to their original identity) and their statements. You wouldn't be able to reply to them, but the text would be there. Icons, probably not.

I agree with this. I would like to keep each comment separate for easier management, but username+link to original identity+text sounds like a good solution.

So they could all be posted as "anon" (they user moving the messages would need to turn on Anon posting temporarily if they normally have it off) and then in the body of the text say "Original comment by So-and-So @ Livejournal.com" (and that itself can be html coded to link back to the actual LJ user's page if it still exists) followed by the message itself.

Oh! That sounds pretty lovely. If it were possible, I think it will be very much awesome.

Sounds like the perfect answer, if someone (not me, unfortunately) can code it that way.
