Three years he waited, and on her 18th birthday he proposed to her. Love shown by teenagers that never dies, GMH. In this case, Jared is the daughter and Jensen is the boyfriend. Is their high school love strong enough to last through years apart? (For the LGMH Meme and my Schmoop Bingo prompt "Proposal(Public Place)")
A/N: When I saw this story on GHM a few days ago, I instantly thought of using it for my Public Proposal prompt on my schmoop card. Then the LGMH meme popped up, it was there, and three hours later this was done. :]
Jared loved Jensen. Saying that was like saying the sky’s blue and the grass is green. It just is, no way of denying it. Jensen loved Jared just as much, if not more. People didn’t really get it; why would a popular straight-A senior want to be with a lowly sophomore. How in the hell did sophomore manage to snag and keep one of the most desirable guys, by both playing fields, in the entire school. It was like getting to the center of a Tootsie-Pop: the world may never know.
When Jared got to school bright and early on March 1st to decorate Jensen’s locker for his 18th birthday, he didn’t expect to get his heart shattered at the same time. Jensen was already at his locker, sitting in front of it with his head in his hands. Jared didn’t even register the rolls of scotch tape and wrapping paper hitting the floor as he ran down the hall, skidding to a stop in front of his boyfriend.
“J-Jen, what’s wrong? Is everything okay? What happened? Are you-” Jared realized he was rambling and his heart was racing and he was three seconds away from flipping the fuck out.
“Jensen…” Jared whispered as he kneeled in front of the older boy and gently pulled his hands away from face. Jensen’s face was pale, making the freckles that Jared loved so much stand out. His eyes were red and puffy and there were tear tracks on his cheeks. Yup, Jared was officially in flipping the fuck out mode.
“Jen, babe, please…what-”
“I can’t be with you anymore, Jay.” Jensen whispered brokenly, voice confused as if he didn’t even understand what he was saying himself.
Okay, that he wasn’t expecting. He vaguely wondered if this is what being punched in the gut felt like, a stabbing pain and a sudden loss of breath. He didn’t understand what was going on. Maybe I heard him wrong.
“Jensen, I…” Jared’s lips formed words that wouldn’t come out.
“I can’t…we need to break up, Jared.” Jensen said quietly, eyes darting around the hallway, momentarily locking on the discarded items down the hall and eyes watering again before he closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
“Jensen, what? No! W-why are you…what happened? Did I do some-is it the birthday decorating? Because dude, I can totally nix that idea. I-I just…” Jared went from flipping a shit to hyperventilating, tears beginning to pool in his eyes and he didn’t care when they fell. He just didn’t understand what the hell was happening. They were fine last night, not even 9 hours ago on the phone, whispering I love you’s in the dark and being so blissfully happy they almost couldn’t stand it.
And now Jensen wanted to break up?
“Jay please…please don’t cry, I-” Jensen was finally looking him in the eye, and the heartbreak Jared saw there just made the tears well up that much faster.
“Don’t cry? You don’t want me to fucking cry?! Jensen, what the hell is going on, because last time I checked we were fine, and now you want to…”
“I don’t want to do anything, Jared.” Jensen answered quietly, still looking him dead in the eye.
Jared looked at him in confusion, biting his cheek almost hard enough to draw blood in an attempt to stem the flow of tears.
“What?”
“Dammit, Jay, I love you, so much, you know I do. It’s just…m-my parents.”
“What about them?” Jared asked shakily. Apparently, his brain was having a hard time keeping up with the situation as he was.
“I turned 18 today Jared.” Jensen replied, as if that lone fact was the answer to this whole mess.
“Yeah and? What of it?”
Jensen sighed and ran a hand through his hair, “I’m 18…and you’re still 15. I-I’m considered an adult now and my parents are f-forcing me to do this.” Jared looked into Jensen’s eyes to see tears pooling again.
Jared swallowed roughly and looking down at the ground, breaths coming in short quick spurts. He needed to get a hold of himself before he passed out. Obviously Jensen realized this as he rested his hand on Jared’s neck and squeezed gently.
“Jay…god, I don’t want to do this, I just…who knows what they’ll do if I don’t do this.”
Jared cupped his hand around the one on his neck held tightly. “So what now…” Jared whispered quietly.
“I’ll wait for you.”
Jared searched the other boy’s eyes and found nothing but desperation and sincerity.
“What?”
“I’ll wait for you, Jared. I’ll wait til you’re 18, and then we can be together again.”
“Y-you’d really do that for me? You’d wait three years for me?”
“I’ll wait however long I need to. You’re it for me, Jared. I don’t fucking care what anyone says or thinks, I know you’re it. I can’t see myself with anyone else in the world. So I’ll wait.”
“Three years?”
“Three years.”
Jared took in a shaky breath before pressing his lips gently against Jensen’s once more. “Happy birthday, Jen, I love you.” Jared whispered against his lips before breaking all contact and walking away.
**
Jared was woken up by a knock on his door at the ungodly hour of 11am in July. For fuck’s sake, any teenager up before noon that didn’t pull an all-nighter just for the hell of it during the summer had better have had a damn good reason for it.
“Jaaaaaay, wake up sleepy head. You’re 18 today!” His mom called out cheerily as she walked into his room and sat on the side of his bed, ruffling his messy hair with her hand.
Jared peaked out from under his pillow to see a chocolate cupcake with a candle in her hand and decided that chocolate was definitely a damn good reason to be up.
He threw his pillow to the side and squinted at her with a smirk as he sat up in bed, “Thanks mom, but wouldn’t this’ve been just as great at 1pm?”
Sherri rolled her eyes before kissing his cheek and handing over the cupcake. “Make a wish sweetie,” She said happily.
He didn’t even have to think about it before his mind decided. Just one word popped in his head as he blew out the candle.
Jensen.

Jared decided that since he had already had a conversation, and already has a small dosage of sugar, he might as well stay awake and actually get dressed before noon.
He was finally 18, an adult.
Three years had finally passed.
It just sucked that two years had passed since Jensen and his family moved away.
They did everything they could to keep in contact, but Jared slowly knew that it just wasn’t going to be possible.
They lived halfway across the country from each other, and as much as Jensen hated it, he would never abandon his family.
It had been over a month since Jared has heard from Jensen. And even then, it was just a congratulatory text message for him graduating high school.
Jared had waited though, was still waiting. He still loved Jensen just as much as he did three years ago. That knowledge gave him hope.
He just hoped that Jensen did too.

“Okay, Jay, we have reservations tonight for just the three of us at the restaurant, but your father and I will be a little late. So we need you to get there by 7:45 and wait for us so we don’t lose our table, kay?” His mom told him. He nodded and kissed her on the cheek and waved goodbye to his dad.
He thought it was weird that they weren’t all going together and that he would be getting there before them, but then he remembered that his dad had been working on something for days, probably for work, so he just shrugged to himself and decided to watch tv to pass the time.
Over the course of the day, he had gotten several phone calls from relatives and family friends and dozens of texts from his friends. He grinned and replied to everyone, but he couldn’t help the sinking feeling he felt every time he opened a new text and saw it wasn’t from Jensen.
Even though they hadn’t been talking much lately, they both never forgot to contact each other during special occasions, especially birthdays, usually by text.
Jared debated calling Jensen himself when he glanced at the time and saw it was 7:15. He ran to his room to get dressed and ready and was out the door within 10 minutes. He was thankful for the minimal traffic and made it to the restaurant at 7:40.
He gave his name to the Maître D and was taken to a smaller table set up towards the back of the restaurant. He raised an eyebrow as he saw that only two places were set. He sat down awkwardly and looked around, hoping his parents would be around soon, when suddenly his phone vibrated in his pocket.
He took it out quickly and couldn’t help the small gasp that left his lips when the name Jensen lit up the screen. He opened the message:
Happy birthday. You’re finally 18.
Jared smirked before flipping his phone open to type out his response.
Yeah, I am. Only took three years.
It’s been a long three years, huh.
Yeah it has…especially since you promised… Jared couldn’t make himself finish the sentence, so he just took a deep breath and sent it, panic flooding to the surface.
“Especially since I promised I’d wait for you.”
Jared froze, cell phone slipping from his fingers and clattering to the table. He couldn’t breathe, let alone turn around. It’s only when he felt a hand on his shoulder that his body decided it was time to move and he stood quickly, spinning to face…to face Jensen.
Jared couldn’t believe this was really happening, that Jensen was really standing in front of him with his cellphone in hand and looking so gorgeous he couldn’t be real. Jared was contemplating pinching himself when Jensen spoke again, “It figures you’d end up taller than me.” He said smiling slightly, eyes inspecting every inch of him.
“J-Jensen?” Jared finally managed to rasp out, still not 100% sure this was real.
“Yeah Jay, it’s me, I swear.”
And that was all Jared needed to know before he closed the distance between them and crushed Jensen to his body. He didn’t care that they were in the middle of a crowded restaurant, he didn’t care if they were being watched. He just didn’t care because he had Jensen. In his arms. Holding him just as tightly. And he was real and he was here and Jared was this close to crying in public at 18 years old.
He felt Jensen’s lips kiss his temple and the corner of his ear and he had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from crying. He pulled back and looked down into Jensen’s eyes, “Wh-what’re you doing here, how’d you-”
“Your mom and dad. They’ve been helping me set this up.”
Jared huffed out a laugh as he finally put the pieces together and realized that this is what his parents had been doing. He made a mental note to hug the crap out of them later.
“They flew you out here for the night, just for me?” Jared asked smiling, his eyes continuing to catalog every one of Jensen’s features.
“Um…more than that, actually. Uh, here,” Jensen grabbed Jared’s arm and maneuvered him back to his seat.
Before Jared could get a word out, Jensen was kneeling in front of him and grabbing Jared’s hand. Suddenly it felt like the oxygen had been sucked out of the room.
“Jared, I’ve loved you ever since I first met you five years ago. I didn’t think it was possible, me falling for someone younger than me, but…I did and I was never happier than when I was with you. When I had to give you up…when I lost you, I-I didn’t know what to do, it hurt just to breathe. But you agreed to wait. That was the only thing keeping me going when we were apart. And now we’re together, and I don’t want to lose you ever again. I meant it when I said you were it for me three years ago. I felt that when then and I do now. You’re it for me, Jay. I love you and I…I want to be with you. So um…what I’m trying to say is…J-Jared, will you marry me?” Jensen reached into his back pocket and pulled out a platinum wedding band, looking hopefully up at Jared.
Jared opened his mouth but when no words formed, he just nodded his head.
A small smile began forming on Jensen’s lips as he squeezed Jared’s hand, “A verbal answer would be nice, Jay.”
“Y-yes,” Jared whispered, still not trusting himself to speak.
Jensen’s eyes lit up as he grinned, “What was that, I didn’t quite catch that.”
“Yes! Yes, Jensen, I’ll marry you.” Jared said loud enough for the people a few tables over to hear. When he slipped the band on Jared’s finger, Jared lifted them both up smashed his lip against Jensen’s. His brain didn’t acknowledge the applause coming from the people around them because he was too focused on the feeling of having Jensen’s lips against his after all these years.
“Happy birthday, Jay. I love you.” Jensen whispered against his lips, smiling as he kissed him again.
He was going to get to have this feeling every day for the rest of his life. No one could say they weren’t allowed to be together anymore, and if someone tried, Jared really didn’t care. He also didn’t care that he was 18 years old and crying in public because Jensen kept his promise.
