I love how you talk about the inner anguish that Jim must be going through, and compounded with Spock's own reluctance to share any of himself with Jim.
Their anger I think comes from having to do things by themselves, and really not knowing how to communicate for help.
I'm glad that Bones and Pike work for ya - they're way too much fun to write, Bones especially, cause he's the best thing ever. And I hope the rest of it did indeed make up for the soul killing!
