Lionel Luthor enjoyed the solitude more than he liked to contemplate. The dark quiet of his chrome and glass high-rise office was all he sometimes longed for. This night each year, he actively sought time alone. A bottle of his favorite scotch, he only companion.

He sat in his desk chair and poured two fingers into the glass. The decanter clunked down heavily on his desk. He picked up his glass and swiveled his chair to look out the window.

Fifteen years ago he had made a decision that had led him and his family on the path they were on. He often wondered if Julian’s death was his own fault for seeking power, the gods’ way of punishing him for naming his stolen daughter for a goddess.

Athena…

She was surprising him. Even if she never became one of the fabled Slayers, she was an asset. She had a brilliant mind and was incredibly athletic. His biggest disappointment was that a year ago she had simply quit competition. No explanation, no fight, she had just made a decision and seen it through. It had then ben followed by the request to move to Smallville.

Lionel had been mildly apprehensive. But his most recent discussion had revealed an insight that was beyond her years. He had never hoped she would be so smart, believing that people were rarely gifted with both physical skills and mental acuity. She had a mind for business and was gaining a better understanding of the class differences and how that power and money worked.

He had heard of Rupert Giles’ move to Smallville, but he did not seem to have any concrete ties to the Council. Not that Lionel’s sources were terribly helpful when they could be easily spelled to forget anything useful they had found.

Lionel sipped his scotched. Save for Quinten Travers, as far as the world was concerned, Buffy Summers perished in a fiery car crash on the way home from the hospital along with her parents. No one was looking for her, no one suspected anything.

But he admitted to living in fear of the day Athena or Lex’s blood was tested against each other. He had made sure Athena could put herself to rights, and Lex’s hospitalization after the meteor shower had served to terrify her of hospitals. Something Lionel had taken full advantage of.

He sighed and balanced his glass on his thigh.

Lionel considered that he should feel guilty. About how he was lying to Lex and Athena. Or even what role his deception might have played in Julian’s death.

He grinned at the dark and silent Metropolis before him. “Guilt,” he scoffed. He was grooming two children who would carry on his legacy. Even if they hated him, they were shaping up nicely to take on the world and carry on the Luthor name.
