Day 26 - Accepted

Jed can be ruthless if needed, but he isn't the same kind of ruthless as Quentin.

The president is just like any politician---heartless and couldnt be bothered by anyone unless it directly affects them. Case in point, buffy summers gave her life to save the world. That merits more than an Oh and a small prayer at night before going to bed! He was so bland when he said oh okay the slayer saved the world, and then switched on who's the next one called. Wow! Heartless. It was like youre just talking about clothes changing a ripped one with a new one. And i get travers sentiment that yeah youre passionately defending the selfish one, the slayer who dropped the ball and took the easy way out---joined the enemy. I dont agree with him killing faith, but i do get where he was coning feom when he got upset about jed's defense of faith. And i think he was passionate bec he doesnt want any untoward incident happens on his watch ( ... )

I think that's part of the interesting thing about writing from the perspective of the Watchers, how heartless and bloodless everything starts to seem when you're used to seeing from the much more visceral perspective of the Slayer and company. Jed was trained, at least partially, to be a Watcher, and he's been paying attention for more than three decades now. Losing a Slayer is not new, not anything close to new, and after a certain point anyone can become inured to the losses. Part of what Quentin and Jed have both felt and experienced is that if a Watcher allows himself to fully experience the life and death of the Slayer, to fully internalize the tragedy, the Watcher becomes unable to function even to save the world. So you're right, they do become colder and more remote, and there's something terrible about that, but perhaps also necessary. It's almost similar to becoming the President, but even worse because the people you're forced to send into danger aren't even volunteer soldiers ( ... )
