Summary: Sometimes people are pushed to their limit.

He watches her from the shadows. She moves fluidly in battle, almost dancing, and he has to remind himself that he is there for a reason. That he has been there for a reason for the last two days. He has watched the way she fights, cataloging her response times, observing her protection. Or lack there of. For someone as important as she is, she either has extreme confidence in her own abilities, or does not understand the danger she faces. He's betting on the latter. 'Hoping' might actually be a better word. He has faced a great many dangers himself, enough evil for a lifetime, but still he runs headlong into battle because it is the only thing he knows.

Except, now he can't.

He is frozen in place by Sam's death. He cannot function, cannot move beyond the pain that is crushing him slowly. He feels as though he is ceasing to exist now that his only tether to the world is gone. He does not know what to do. His first thought was to track down a crossroads demon, someone with whom he could make a deal to bring his brother back. He had believed that he was worth something. He knows now that he isn't. But if he could somehow trade his life for Sam's, he would. It was his job to protect his little brother and he failed.

But she won't.

Her had heard about her, whispers really, in dark corners where the Hunters and their prey could find solace from the horrors in their lives. They spoke about her abilities. They chronicled her history and greatest battles. They spoke about the myth of the Slayer. He had thought it was just that-a myth-but the woman he was watching was no story. She was remarkable, that much was true, but she was not beyond his reach. She couldn't be. She was his only hope of getting Sam back and he would make her help him.
