“Umm, Buffy, not to be a guy or anything, but are you PMSing or something?” Jon asked after her five-minute diatribe about her roommate.
“What?” she asked, thrown off her rant by the question.
“Well, I don’t know you well enough to know if you’re naturally this crazy every month or if this is something unique,” he answered carefully. She was only a couple steps away from frothing at the mouth, but what he did know about her didn’t seem to go over the edge because of a roommate’s quirks.
Yes, he only knew her for a couple weeks, but she generally appeared to be in control of her emotions and stuff. If she wasn’t, her superpowers would have gotten her into serious trouble a long time ago.
Buffy fought the urge to yell at him, which made her stop and think for a minute. While she embraced her emotions and stuff to make herself a better Slayer, this was like emotion overload. “I wonder if that demon from the other night made my hormones wacky.”
“What’s weird is that your behavior is specifically focused on Kathy. You aren’t getting easily annoyed by anyone else, are you?” Jon inquired. “Have you ever had to share a room before?” he added off-handedly. Maybe it was a simple personality conflict.
“It’s just Kathy, and I went to camp several times and we slept in bunkbeds. That wasn’t a problem,” she said before he could ask. She could feel her blood pressure lowering as he approached the situation logically without just dismissing her worries out of hand.
“I have a neighbor who has a private room because her roommate disappeared last year during the first week of her freshman year. Probably Sunday and her gang got her. I think maybe we should ask if you can spend a night or two with her, just until we figure out the hyper-bitch thing you’ve got going on,” Jon suggested with more confidence. While she was easily angered, it felt more directed at a particular person, which meant he was safe…maybe.
“Anything to get away from Divas all-day, all-night. Let’s go see your roommate. What’s her name?” Buffy asked before slapping his arm just hard enough to sting a bit. “That’s for basically calling me a bitch.”
“Eh, I thought I could get away with it,” he responded, rubbing the sore spot. “Tara’s really shy, so don’t expect all-night gab sessions or anything. It was only a fluke thing that we got to talking. She’s pretty great.”
“Well, I was going to hit the dining hall, but I’d rather come up with a different place to stay tonight first. Plus, knowing my luck, I’d run into Kathy there,” Buffy said, not realizing she had just avoided College Mistake #1 - aka Parker Abrams.
--------------------------------
Tara was cool with Buffy staying for a couple nights. There was something ultimately comforting about her, current issues notwithstanding. Tara could just tell she’d be safe with Buffy around.
She and Jon went with Buffy back to Stevenson so she could pack a bag, leave a note for Kathy and inform her RA - at Tara’s suggestion - that she was getting away from a roommate situation that was getting worse every day.
The RA commended Buffy for being responsible enough to get away until she was in a calmer state of mind, but warned her that she couldn’t run away from all her problems. The RA expected Buffy to sit down with her and Kathy to see if they could resolve their issues or if more extreme actions had to be taken once she was on an even keel.
That night, Buffy had the best night’s sleep she had had in over a week. No nightmares and no waking up to Kathy staring at her. Feeling loads better already, she looked around more closely at the room she was temporarily bunking in. There was something familiar about some of the knickknacks, but she couldn’t put her finger on it right away.
Tara came back from the bathroom and saw Buffy looking at her Wicca supplies. “I don’t know if this is a problem for you, but I’m a witch. I practice Wicca, I mean,” she stuttered out, wondering if Buffy would think she was crazy or not.
“Really, my best friend in high school was a witch, too. I don’t know if she did the Wicca thing, or if it was just about spells for her,” Buffy admitted. She wasn’t about to declare herself the Slayer, but it felt safe to mention Willow practicing magic to somebody else who practiced it.
“If you want, I can do a spell to cleanse your aura,” Tara offered shyly. “It might help with your problem.”
“Couldn’t hurt,” Buffy said easily. “Assuming you have better success with your spells than Willow had with hers.”
“It’s one of the first spells my mother taught me, and it’s very simple,” Tara assured her, gathering the ingredients she needed for the spell.
-------------------------------
While Tara was performing the spell, over in Stevenson, Kathy Newman felt the mortal soul she had been consuming being released from her body as she showered. Panicked, she raced back to her room and grabbed a bag so she could try and outrun her father’s goons.
The RA knocked on the open door and saw the frantic packing, then asked, “Is everything okay, Kathy? Buffy said you two were having something settling in issues. I wanted to talk to both of you about it before it gets out of hand.”
“Get out!” Kathy yelled, pushing the RA out and locking the door.
While the RA was knocking on the door and attempting to get back in, Taparrich showed up to retrieve his wayward daughter. By the time the RA got her master keys and opened the door, the transdimensional portal was closed and the room looked normal - except for the open window.
Sensing something hinky was going on, the RA reported this up the chain of command and the inquiry hit a dead end when there was no record of the school Kathy supposedly graduated from back in Nebraska. In fact, there was no record of Kathy Newman at all…at least not one that matched the description of this missing person.
The police assumed she was on the run from the police or another bad situation, and in typical Sunnydale fashion, declared the case closed.
Luckily for Buffy, that meant she got to have the room to herself for at least the rest of the semester…possibly the year.
A/N: Yup, I sidestepped Parker - at least temporarily - and got Tara involved a lot sooner. Two very awesome things in my humble authoress’ opinion.
