Padme listened as her military commanders briefed her on the last information concerning the Trade Federation’s blockade of their world. Once they left, and it was just her and Buffy, she said, “I apologize if it appears that I don’t trust you and your information--”

“Don’t worry about it, Your Majesty,” Buffy interrupted, knowing that she could get away with it since they were alone. “You’ve started an alliance with the Gungans and have escape plans in place when the Federation begins its occupation. You’re listening to me; you’re just acting on the information that you can share with others. Have you decided yet what you’re going to do when the Jedi arrive?”

“Like you said, I can only act on the information that others know,” Padme began. “I have to give the Senate a chance to resolve this.”

“What about Anakin and his mother?” Buffy asked.

“If we end up on Tatooine and meet him, I will be sure to have something we can trade for his mother,” Padme promised.

“Remember, they don’t like Republic credits there. You have to have something with intrinsic value that the Jedi don’t know about until it’s too late to use for the ship,” Buffy warned the Queen.

Padme had to think very carefully about which parts of the information Buffy gave her she could act on without derailing the timeline as Buffy knew it. Truly, there was no reason to get involved with Anakin and his mother, but if what Buffy said was true, the universe would shake in fear of the monster he would become if his mother wasn’t protected.

On the other hand, if the Jedi never got to Tatooine and met the boy, what were the chances he would ever be trained?

---------------

Once the ship escaped the blockade and was on their way to Coruscant, the Jedi discovered the hyperdrive generator needed to be replaced. Rather than stopping, Buffy saved the day by ‘finding’ a misplaced crate that included a new generator and some fuel rods to power it.

Captain Panaka decided that it was far too dangerous to set down on any planet to their repairs. They found a nearby moon to land on and fixed the ship so they could continue their journey to the Senate to plead their case.

Within hours, the repairs were made and soon they were arriving in Coruscant.

“Don’t worry about Anakin and his mom,” Buffy said to Padme on the way. “Once this invasion is taken care of, we can remind the Senate of their duty to enforce the anti-slavery laws on all planets.” She paused for several minutes while thinking about what she was going to say next. “You should probably know that Senator Palpatine is actually a Sith Lord named Sidious. He will try to manipulate you into calling for a vote of no confidence for Chancellor Valorum so that he can take the Chancellor’s place. It hinges on you having proof of the invasion when you go before the Senate.”

“Then I shall bring proof,” Queen Amidala vowed.

A/N: Now we’ve entered the AU Star Wars-verse. Don’t know if it will remain that AU, though. The Dark Side will always find a way!
