Eureka
It took a grueling 24 hours for the scientists to finish reprograming the VR machine and to make sure the Aprilbot memory was completely deleted from her system so SARAH wouldn’t have anything to build on.
Buffy was tasked with talking SARAH into downloading her entire program into the bot, then hooking her into the machine. For the first several days, SARAH would be able to disconnect herself from the machine and interact with the real world. This was to be sure that they could safely shut down the bunker and turn it into a normal house. If SARAH felt she was being tricked, she could attempt to take over the bunker again.
Once a set number of days passed and SARAH hooked in, it would be for the last time. She would then get looped into a self-sustaining cycle that followed SARAH’s lead for how she wanted her world to be. After that, all inputs and outputs would be disabled and booby-trapped so if anyone got the bright idea to set SARAH free, they would be crippling her instead.
That part was only known to the Scoobies because it required a couple magic spells from Willow to set up. After that, the only way to undo their work was to figure out how to undo Willow’s spells…which seemed rather unlikely when talking to scientists.
Faith was there to provide the muscle in case the people of Eureka balked at giving up their AI - despite its hostage-taking tendencies. Buffy would have stayed to help, but she had to get to the SGC and begin her evaluations.
“Did you return with my companion?” SARAH inquired of Buffy when she got back to the bunker doors.
“Not exactly,” Buffy responded, then quickly added, “given the time frame I had, I could only get the first pieces in place. We have an android body for you to download your system into so you can participate in Eureka activities until a second android body can be completed. We also have the charging station for that android. The other organization was in the process of attempting to back-engineer them so they could create more. While they could let us have these ones, they couldn’t give us more.”
SARAH was silent for an interminably long minute before replying, “That is logical. How should we proceed?”
Buffy nodded to Willow, who was still in the moving truck with the bot. “This is my friend, Willow. She agreed to bring the Aprilbot and her charging station here so we could keep the two government projects separate. She is extremely intelligent and knows a lot about computers and stuff.”
“Willow Rosenberg. Genius level intelligence, recruited by several technology companies in high school…she is acceptable assistance,” SARAH acknowledged.
“The charging station is too complex to bring down to the bunker right away, so we’re putting it in a shed next to the door until something can be designed to get it inside,” Buffy explained, neglecting to say that way before anything could be thought up, the machine would be at Slayer headquarters locked in a room away from the world.
SARAH and the people trapped inside watched as Buffy unloaded a forklift from the truck, complete with a shed on a pallet. Then she went back for the machine on a narrower pallet. Finally, she brought out a portable generator that Willow immediately hooked up to the machine.
Once that was done, Willow pressed a button on the machine which allowed the android to get up. “We have stripped April’s core programming except for movements to make it easier for you to download yourself,” she explained. “The power necessary for that will nearly deplete the android’s battery so you will need to recharge for most of the time for the next several days. Once the systems have stabilized, you will be able to leave the vicinity of the charging station.”
“Will I be able to upload my program back into the house?” SARAH asked.
Willow shook her head. “Not without damaging the android and making it virtually useless. Once there are replacement bodies, that won’t be an issue, but until they are complete…” she trailed off, letting the AI complete the thought itself.
Buffy stepped forward and waved to the truck again. “Now, until you are able to defend yourself and the machine, Faith will stay and guard you. Trust me, she can kick the ass of anyone in this town.”
“Ah, B, you say the nicest things,” Faith drawled. She looked like a cross between Lara Croft and a ninja assassin. A hot chick with a killer bod and revealing clothes, but with a pair of blades instead of guns. “The Pres said I have the right to do whatever I need to to make sure things go smoothly,” she said as a warning to the mad scientists listening in.
“We’ll bring April in so you can begin your download,” Willow said.
“I’ll stay with the machine,” Faith added. “Keep anyone from tinkering with it.”
SARAH felt protected by these women. While most would dismiss them due to their gender and size, they carried themselves with such an air of confidence that it was near tangible - even to a machine…at least an intelligent one.
“I will release everyone and provide Angus MacGyver with the data he seeks concerning his friend,” SARAH promised.
When the door opened this time, it stayed open and let the people inside to get out, which they did quickly but cautiously.
“How annoying did the whole name thing get, Angus?” Buffy asked. Mac.
“Extremely,” he replied shortly. It wasn’t that he hated his name exactly; he just hated that people knew it. He held up a tablet and said, “I have the information I need, so we just need to get back and I’ll get you that autograph. Can I say sorry enough times for dragging you into this?” he wondered aloud.
“Don’t worry about it. It’s the story of my life,” Buffy assured him. “I can’t go with you because I have another favor to finish, but my sister, Dawn with go in my place.”
“Give me a call when you’re done with your favors,” Mac requested.
“It may be a while, but sure…sounds like fun. Just no more retreats, okay?” Buffy teased.
A/N: Wow, I’m starting to feel really bad for how they are going to betray SARAH. How weird is that?
