Stars Hollow
Oz was walking around the city-wide yard sale, just browsing in case anything struck his fancy. His van was paid off now, so his continued presence in town was because he wanted to stay, not because he needed to.
All of a sudden, his Miss Patty alert flared up. After several inappropriate pinches, he trained himself to recognize when she was nearby. Sure enough, when he turned around, she was standing right there, smiling at him in a way that was part normal Miss Patty leering and part…knowing?
“I know your secret,” she said, confirming his thoughts. What could she know? “Your special monthly cycle…” she explained in a vague way. Either she thought he was a woman hiding as a man or she knew about the wolf.
“Yeah?” he asked, wondering if he was about to be blackmailed or threatened. He didn’t think she was like that, but people could surprise you - both in a good way and in a bad.
“With my life and experiences, there isn’t much I haven’t seen before,” Miss Patty admitted. “Some of my most energetic lovers had the same wild side as you. Those were great times! All I want to know is if you’re being safe.”
“I take certain precautions, but I’ve also learned to control the change…usually,” he told her. “Back home, I didn’t change like normal, but when I got overly emotional, it happened during the day.”
She actually looked amazed by that piece of news. “How did you manage that?” she asked, thinking she knew a few people that might benefit.
“Learned some mediation, chanting, charms and took special herbs from at a Tibetan monastery,” Oz explained. “After several months, I thought I had it under control and could go home. Found out I was wrong in a big way.”
“Did you hurt anyone?” Miss Patty inquired sympathetically. She figured she knew what kind of man he was, and he wasn’t the type to enjoy inflicting pain.
He shook his head. “No, but it was a close thing. I was captured and almost experimented on before some friends rescued me. Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure, sugar.”
“Is there much supernatural activity around here? I haven’t noticed anything, but I wasn’t sure if that was because there wasn’t or if I just haven’t seen it,” he said.
Miss Patty shrugged her large frame. “It goes in cycles. Right now we are remarkably evil free. Most of the supernaturals who live around here are non-violent and tend to blend into the regular folk. They know that I know, so if they need to talk, they can come to me,” she added with a look that said she making an offer to him.
He smiled a little. “Thanks. It’s strange that I actually miss having somebody to talk about this stuff with. My friends from back home would think I’m crazy for saying that.”
“It’s part of life - especially yours. No sense in trying to bury it,” she said wisely.
“Miss Patty, have you captured your own musician?” Lorelai asked teasingly as she strode over to them. “Don’t you know they belong in the wild?”
“You don’t know the half of it, darling,” Miss Patty answered with a chuckle. “Don’t worry, I haven’t broken the boy…yet.”
Oz decided that was his cue to take off for safer pastures. “Good luck with the sale, Lorelai…Miss Patty. Good talking with you.”
“You looked like you were in a fairly serious conversation with him. How did you get him to say more than four words consecutively?” Lorelai demanded. She still hadn’t discovered that much about Luke’s new cook. She only found out about the musician part when he joined the town troubadour for an impromptu concert. Fortunately for her, Miss Patty was one of the town criers.
Unfortunately for her, Miss Patty wasn’t saying anything about Oz’s special secret. All she would say - and it was a guess on her part - was that he was recovering from a broken heart.
A/N: I may have to put off the next chapter for my Favors story until the weekend when I (hopefully) have more time to write…hahaha.
