Buffy took a deep calming breath. She opened an hour ago and had twenty minutes before her first scheduled class. It was a free mini course, meant to entice people into signing up.
No one had stepped through the door or called. It also didn’t help that she had scratches and bruises still healing from a fight the night before. While they didn’t look as bad as they had that morning, they were still clearly visible.
She forcibly turned herself away from the door to pace across the room. Her hands were balled to control her nervousness.
Suddenly the door opened. She had to keep from whipping around. Buffy collected herself and pivoted to face the person who entered with a smile.
A woman in a gray pantsuit approximately her height entered with a duffel bag. Her blonde hair was in a bun.
“Hi,” the woman said when she came to a stop in front of Buffy. “I’m Juliet O’Hara.”
Buffy shook her hand, remembering to use her alias she replied, “Beth. Welcome to the Hellmouth, Juliet.”
“Wow, you got into a bad fight,” Juliet said with concern as she looked at the mottled bruising on her face and arm.
“I did,” she acknowledged. “I’m only this bruised because the odds were not in my favor.”
“What happened?”
“Underground MMA fights,” she lied carefully.
Juliet went rigid, her smile freezing on her face. “Really?”
Buffy grinned. “Since you’re a cop, I’m going to answer no.”
Juliet blinked in surprise. “How did you know?”
“You’re armed. Small of your back. It’s a little heavy, makes you stand straighter, but ruins the lines of your outfit.” She pointed to the duffel. “You also have a Miami PD insignia on your bag.”
“Do you have any relation to a Shawn Spencer?”
Buffy laughed. “No. I guess you could say Henry adopted me a year ago. But I’ve only met Shawn a couple of weeks ago.”
Juliet smiled in bewilderment. “Changing rooms?”
“Straight back, first door on the left.”
“Thanks.”
Buffy waited until Juliet was out of sight before relaxing. She had learned early on that Henry was a retired cop and detective. She also knew he had taught the observation skills to Shawn from childhood. Her assumption was that Shawn was supposed to go into law enforcement, but she wasn’t sure what had happened to derail such a plan. Especially since he ended up working with SBPD and Detective Juliet O’Hara.

Henry entered the Hellmouth a few minutes before her free class was to end. He grinned at what he saw. Over a dozen members of law enforcement were in attendance. Buffy stood at the front going through a series of common defensive moves and missteps. He recognized Juliet at the front following Buffy’s steps.
“You,” Buffy pointed to a tall man at the back that he recognized as Buzz McNab, “attack me.”
“I really don’t-”
“You’re 6’5”, I’m 5’3”. Let’s see if your height puts you at an advantage.” Buzz came at her, a little unsure, but determined to try.
In a second she had him flat on his back. “Woah,” he looked up at her in surprise.
Buffy smiled and pulled him to his feet. “What’s your name?”
“Buzz.”
“Nice to meet you,” she said. “Your mistake was trying to get to my level.” She waited for him to nod. “You’ve always been a big kid,” she deduced. “You’re used to making yourself appear smaller or non-threatening to control a situation.”
Buzz nodded again. “Yes.”
“Your height can be an advantage against someone my size. Just as my size can be used against you.” She smiled up at him, then glanced at the clock on the wall. “That is time. I want to thank all of you for being here for my first class. My information is on the desk as well as applications and release forms. My phone number is on there as well, let me know if you have any questions.”
The gathered gave her several claps of appreciation before they started to disperse.
“Henry,” Juliet greeted when she saw him.
“Juliet, Beth,” he looked around. “Looked like it was a good class.”
Buffy smiled. “It was.”
Henry grabbed her chin and tilted her head to get a look at the bruising. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” she replied evenly. It was the first time she had needed to lie about a fight in Santa Barbara. And lying to Henry left her with an uneasy feeling. Her mother had never asked about the blood and bruises. Giles treated only the severe ones and shrugged them all off as par for course. Even Willow and Xander had stopped reacting to black eyes and bandaged arms.
“Nothing?” he scoffed. Henry frowned. “I saw you only two days ago, you didn’t have any bruises.”
Buffy swallowed and gave a strained smile. “It’s nothing, I’m fine and mostly healed.”
“What aren’t you telling me?” he asked.
Luckily, they were interrupted by another cop, which allowed Buffy to step away.
