Not So Accidental Tourist
by Beriaearwen
Buffy sat looking at the painting. The longer she'd been in Rome, the more she began to understand why her mother always loved art. She was two semesters into her online Art History program and was enjoying it.
Apparently all she had to do to rediscover her love of learning was change the world, oust someone calling themselves “The Immortal” from the top of the supernatural food chain and finally give in to Dawn's nagging. Stupid intelligent little sisters seeing more than they should...
Still... it was nice when your homework entailed spending time in beautiful museums in an ancient city.
Her musings were interrupted when a body bumped into her from behind, knocking her off balance, which she quickly managed to correct before she fell off the bench completely. The person who ran into her, though was not quite so lucky and ended up on the floor at her feet. Her first thought was that he was cute. Her next thought was that he didn't look quite flustered enough for it to be completely an accident. “Are you OK?” she asked as she stood and offered a hand to the man.
“Fine,” he assured. He righted himself slightly before accepting her hand and standing. “A bid embarrassed. It's been a while since I was in Rome and I got a little lost in the art.”
“Are you an artist?” Buffy asked. He looked academic, but Giles type of academic - one ready to go into the field.
“Archaeologist and linguist,” he offered. “But I minored in Art History.”
“So you do digs and such?” she asked. That could explain his fitness level, but she still felt there was something more. She once more found herself comparing him to Giles. There was something about him that spoke of action and battle, of readiness and the ferocity only those who have fought for their lives can have.
“Some,” he nodded, pushing his glasses up. “I've been focusing more on the linguistics recently.”
“I've never been very good at languages. It's taken me forever to get enough Italian to get by and I still have nightmares about French class.” It was true. Her French class - the one that actually taught her French - had been that cursed Halloween costume and she did still have nightmares about being that helpless.
Daniel stuffed his hands in his pockets momentarily before pulling them out again. “I... would you like to get come coffee and continue our conversation?” he asked with only a slight blush on his cheeks.
Buffy smiled. Cute guy asks her to coffee - the non-relationship beverage of choice - she'll accept. “I'd love to.”
She threaded her arm through his in a friendly and hopefully flirtatious manner. The fact it brought him close enough to her to use as a hostage didn't hurt if this was some sort of trap and, if not, well, his were good arms to have.

They talked. They laughed. They charmed each other. Coffee became supper and a walk down the piazza.
When he asked if they could meet again in the morning, Buffy declined, stating she had a previous commitment and managed to distract him enough that he didn't realize she never gave him her number, email or address until she'd vanished into the night.

“I can't believed they tried that with you!” Andrew ranted, walking up and down the room as soon as Buffy closed the door behind her. “The rest of his team was right there watching, waiting.”
“His team, Sylvia, Carmella, Angelica, a couple MIB government types and Dawn.” Buffy smiled when Dawn's identifiable “Rats!” reached her ears. Sitting on the couch, she waited for Dawn to join them.
“Any ideas what they wanted?” Dawn asked.
“I'm assuming the same old same old - work together, learn all of our secrets, reveal none of theirs and then report us back to their bosses,” Buffy said with a shrug. “Gotta say, Daniel didn't make it easy to get away.”
Dawn and Andrew exchanged excited smiles. It was the first time Buffy had expressed an interest in a man since Spike.
“No,” Buffy commanded. “We can't afford that entanglement. Especially with the administration changing in a few months.”
Andrew and Dawn sighed, but let it go.

“How did you not get her number?” Cam demanded. “You had her eating out of the palm of your hand.”
Vala snorted. Cam sent her a glare. The space pirate hadn't been the least bit jealous of Daniel and the Summers woman which led him to believe her desire for Daniel may not be quite as desperate as she pretended it was.
“She made us before we left the museum and had her suspicions as soon as Daniel hit the floor,” Vala revealed, slipping off the arm of the chair and into it before grabbing her pint of ice cream from the table.
“What do you mean?” Daniel asked. He was certain she hadn't suspected.
“Good question,” Sam added. “I didn't see anything to indicate that in her behavior.”
Vala just shook her head at them. “No matter how wrong your opinions are on this matter, the fact remains, we won't have success approaching her again. And that's a real shame because she was very attracted to you, Daniel and most of her responses were genuine. Under different circumstances, you would have made an interesting couple.”
“Well, if Summers is burned we'll have to try someone else. There has to be a way in,” Cam said. “Let's sleep on this and regroup in the morning.”
As everyone was leaving, Daniel moved next to Vala, “You really think she was interested?” he asked, half hopeful, half curious.
Vala just laughed. “Oh, Daniel. The things you need to learn.”
