LA beach

It was nice being back in her old hometown. There were some rather unpleasant memories - especially from her last visit when Angel’s group tried to commit suicide with LA’s innocents being put in the crosshairs. But it was still an awesome city with excellent shopping and killer beaches. And even if she couldn’t take the time to do the first, at least she was getting a chance to enjoy the second.

As Buffy stood there, watching the waves roll towards the shore, she heard a guy yell, “Mike, look out behind you!”

She turned and saw a young kid rollerblading backwards and right for her. She tried to spin out the way, but was only partially successful. She still got clipped, but not enough to knock her to the ground.

“Are you okay?” one of the grown men skating with the kids asked. “Good reflexes, by the way. Another second and you would have been clear.”

Checking herself for damage, Buffy smiled at him and replied, “A little scuffed, but nothing major.”

“I’m sorry, ma’am,” the boy - Mike - said apologetically.

She gave a fake gasp of pain and said, “I was fine until the ma’am. Do I really look that old?”

Before the worried teen could answer, the guy in front of her interjected, “You look younger than your age.” He turned to the boys and said, “Always, always play it safe when a woman asks about her age or weight.”

“I would be offended, but he’s right,” Buffy added with a grin. “Since you’re being Mr. Helpful, I was wondering if you could help me, too? Are you from this neighborhood by any chance?”

“Sure am, ma’a-miss,” he quickly corrected himself before she could glare at him.

“I’m looking for a guy named MacGyver, but I don’t know if that’s his first name or last name. Do you know him?”

“He is him,” the boys answered. “Guess you’ll be busy now, Mac; catch ya’ later!” they called as they skated away.

“I’d better keep them out of trouble. Bye,” the other guy said before chasing the boys.

MacGyver stared at the retreating figures of his friends, then smiled at the woman next to him, hoping she wasn’t going to try and kill him. “It seems like I have some free time right now. Why are you looking for me? You can call me either Mac or MacGyver.”

“Nice to meet you, Mac. I’m Buffy Summers. Do you want to get something to drink or walk and talk?” she asked.

“Let’s do both,” he suggested. “There’s a fantastic lemonade stand down the boardwalk.”

Without getting into specifics, Buffy explained that she needed a favor for a favor, etc.

“To get my latest favor, I need you to get in touch with your quote ‘guy’ - that’s Barney’s word - who can get me a certain piece of hockey memorabilia. A signed jersey by a hall of famer for the Vancouver Canucks.”

“Barney? Barney Stinson? What does he want with that jersey? Is he going to pretend to be a professional hockey player again?”

“No, the girl he’s in love with - and yes, I do believe he actually loves her - is a big fan and he wants a grand gesture to show her how much he cares,” Buffy said.

“Well, as luck would have it, there’s a charity event happening in a couple weeks and I know some retired players from across the league are attending. I could ask around…” he trailed off, waiting for her to ask.

She saw the gleam in his eyes and sighed. “Okay, what do you want in return?”

“I’d never ask for a favor like this from the guys who already donate so much for charity just for some guy’s grand gesture - especially one I don’t really like - but I was hoping that you’d be willing to take a short trip with me in exchange. The trip is important enough that I’d ask the whole Canuck team to sign a jersey, if it would help at all.”

Buffy’s eyes narrowed. “What’s the trip and why do you need me to go?”

He answered her second question first, “You appear to be able to handle yourself and I need a partner of the female persuasion to get me in the door of this particular community. See, they’re having a Mensa couples’ retreat-”

“And when they find out I’m not Mensa material?” Buffy cut in.

“I’m sure you can fake it long enough,” Mac rebutted. “It is important. It could save lives, Buffy.”

All she could do was groan in reply.

A/N: I know you have questions about how Angel ended - and I’m telling you right now it isn’t canon - but the story of that will have to wait for now. Maybe as a bonus chapter if I get the time.
