I'm surprised ice skating wasn't already a thing at Hogwarts. They do have a lake.

Did it freeze over, though? I would say that it wouldn't be safe to skate on a lake that was only partially frozen, but this is Hogwarts we're talking about...the school that decides it's a good idea to have 4 students swim in the lake in February. Dumbledore would probably say, "Stay within 20 feet of the shore unless you want to die a cold, watery death."
