Summary: Dawn Summers couldn't help but laugh at the man beside her.
Dawn Summers couldn't help but laugh at the man beside her. She had never seen anyone so wigged, and all because his gran had found out he was dating someone and now wanted to meet her.
Although, a part of her thought it was too early. They had only been on six dates, he hadn't even asked her to be his girlfriend yet.
"You do know that your gran isn't going to be the scariest thing I've faced, right?" Glory and The First would always take first prize.
Neville Longbottom paused in his small breakdown to smile at her. "Oh, I know. It's just that... Gran doesn't buy into the pureblood nonsense, she wouldn't care if I was dating a muggle-born, but I'm not sure how she would react to the fact that you're a..." He trailed off at her raised eyebrows. Like any good potential boyfriend, he knew when not to finish a sentence.
"An American college student?" she offered, deciding to cut him a break. "Maybe you should mention that I'm going to Oxford. That might impress her... except that she's probably never even heard of Oxford."
"You know, I've stood up to Voldemort, I used Godric Gryffindor's sword to kill his snake, but you would think that I wouldn't be worried about introducing you to my gran."
"No, I totally get it," Dawn reassured him. She so did. "Trust me, it's easier facing bad guys, than it is your family sometimes. I get it. To be honest, I'm not sure who is going to be worse when I introduce you, Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles or Faith. Giles is going to cluck disapprovingly, because I'm dating a wand-wizard and I was careless enough to let you see me kill a demon - which was totally not my fault by the way. Though, you'll probably earn some browny points because you helped me. Xander will wig out, because wand-wizards are all about the wand waving and the mind-control and altering of memories and the treating of anyone without magic like pond-scum. Willow will probably start checking me for spells. Faith will just hit on you... and then threaten to hit you."
"I really wish I was the first wand-wizard you met," Neville lamented. This wasn't the first time they had discussed this. Not the meeting each other's family but wand-wizards and wand-witches versus earth-wizard and earth-witches. "I really don't think Blaise Zabini left your friends with the right impression of us."
Dawn smiled. "Zabini was a douche, but he's not the reason my family are extremely reluctant to talk to wand-wizards. Giles said the Council disliked wand-wizards long before Blaise Zabini tried to obliviate me."
"How do you think your sister will react?"
"She dated two vampires, she hasn't got a leg to stand on."
Neville gave her a look.
She winced. "I'm refusing to even contemplate how Buffy will react. She has a thing about how frequently you obliviate non-magical people and that you can make a person do what you want with a single word."
They both sighed.
"Maybe you should tell your gran that we're not dating anymore," Dawn suggested, sounding depressed. "We can date in secret and then only introduce me if things become serious." As far as Dawn was concerned, it was far too soon in their relationship for this. She didn't think they were strong enough as a couple to survive the pressure of being from two different worlds yet.
Neville shook his head. "It's different in the wizarding world, we usually get married quite young. Gran is already upset that I haven't gotten married yet and if I say we broke up, she'll start bringing over eligible witches. She'll know I'm lying the second I refuse to date any of them. I think she expects me to be married soon, that's why she wanted to meet you when I told her I had met someone."
"She won't like me dating you, let alone marrying you, would she?" Dawn asked. "I mean, if I was a first generation witch, she would be fine. But I'm not a witch. I dabble in earth-magics, but I don't have a magical core like you do."
They had already checked.
"I'm the last of my line," Neville said. "And if I marry a muggle, there is a fifty/fifty chance that my kids wouldn't be magical. It would cause problems."
"I'm not really sure I even want kids." Dawn confessed.
Dawn's heart constricted at the miserable look on Neville's face, and knew that it probably mirrored her own.
It wasn't fair.
He was handsome, brave and knew about the supernatural world. He would have been perfect for her, in a few years once she had finished college. Sowed a few oats. But by then, he would already be married with kids.
Not wanting the conversation to continue, Dawn leaned over and kissed Neville.
It tasted like goodbye.
