“Damnit!” Zoe frowned at the napkin holder. This was the third time in two weeks she’d crushed one while refilling it.

“Zoe. Zoe. Zoe,” Vincent said sadly, “what has the napkin dispenser done to you?”

“I’m sorry, Vince,” she set everything down slowly. “I haven’t been feeling myself the last couple of months. I’ve had the strangest dreams. Then the last month I can’t seem to stop eating and doing the smallest tasks ends in something being broken.”

“Have you talked to your father?”

The girl rolled her eyes. “He dragged me into GD and had Allison run every test she could think of.”

“And…?”

“Nothing.” She threw her hands up. “She compared some of my previous scans. My metabolism is a little higher and my muscles are denser, but all can be explained by my age and physical activities.”

“Well perhaps you could stop taking it out on my napkin dispensers and see about the customers?” he suggested.

Zoe nodded slowly. Looking around she headed for a table in the middle of the room. It was occupied by a blonde woman who couldn’t have been more than twenty-five.

“Welcome to Café Diem, I’m Zoe.” She managed to smile. “Whatever you want, we have.”

“As nice as that sounds, I believe I have what you want.” The woman looked up. “Like an explanation for your sudden strength and metabolism, and other heightened senses.”

Zoe’s blue eyes went wide a moment before they narrowed on the hazel of the woman before her. “What do you know?”

The woman smirked slightly. “This is an unusual town.”

A frown appeared on the younger woman’s face. “I’m aware. I’m also used to it. What I’m not used to is someone denying me answers about what’s happening to me.”

The customer’s eyes flashed a moment before she shrugged and stood up. “Maybe it’s not the right time to give them to you. You wouldn’t believe me now.”

Zoe watched as the woman left the café. At the same time her dad came in nearly colliding with the girl.

He walked right up and smiled.

“Dad,” she looked up, slightly frightened.

“Zoe? He asked in concern, “what’s wrong?”

“There was a woman, she said she knew about what was happening to me…”

“What did she tell you?”

“Nothing, she just…left.”

“Do you want me to go after her?” he asked.

“No…” she looked up at him. “No. I’m going after her.”

“Zoe-”

“Dad." She took off her apron. “I need to do this.”

Not waiting for an answer she ran out of the café. She turned right, looking for the other woman. There at the end of the block she saw a flash of blonde hair. She took off running for the corner only to reach it and find the woman at the end of the next block. She followed the woman, wondering how she moved so fast to get to the end of the street before Zoe reach the corner.

Then near the edge of town she found the woman waiting for her.

“You move fast,” the woman commented.

“You’re one to talk,” Zoe said.

“Do you feel tired? Out of breath?”

“No…”

“How far are we from the café?”

Zoe looked around. “A little more than two miles.”

“Have you ever run that far in…” She glanced at her watch. “Eleven minutes?”

“No,” her brows furrowed. “Who are you?”

“My name is Buffy.” The woman gave a half smile. “I came to find a girl of extraordinary talents.”

“I’m smart, but that’s ordinary in this town.” Zoe shook her head.

“Not many people can accidently crush stainless steel napkin… things.” She gestured. “Nor can they keep up with me.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m a Slayer,” Buffy sighed. “One of two thousand girls who has the strength, power, and ability to beat back force that conspire to destroy humanity.”

“Like what?”

“Vampires mostly, demons, apocalypses… whatever comes up.”

“What does that have to d-”

“Don’t play dumb, Zoe.” She rolled her eyes.

“Are you telling me, I’m a… Slayer?”

“Yes.” Buffy nodded. “I’ve come to protect you until you make your decision."

“Decision?”

“You can come with me and the Council will train you to control your powers. Or I spend a couple weeks here, teach you as much as possible and get on my way as soon as you’re confident you’re not going to hurt anyone.”

“Why me?”

Buffy scoffed. “I’ve been asking myself the same question for ten years. When I was fifteen there was no choice - I learned how to fight or I died. Now there are thousands and you get to choose what to do.”

“I don’t want to leave Eureka,” she stated boldly arms crossing over her chest.

“Okay. So where can a girl find a place to stay in this town?”
