“Hi Willow. I ordered a hot chocolate for you.” Steve said from the counter when Willow walked in.
“Thanks Steve.” Willow said setting down her books and bag in a chair at a table. “You said you had something you needed to tell me about.”
“More than one thing.”
Willow watched Steve as he stared at his mug with both of his hands wrapped around it.
“You’re worried I’ll call you a liar or will refuse to have anything to do with you with out listening to you and any proof you have.” Willow quietly said, gently smiling when Steve looked at her shocked.
“Would it help if I said I already know you were as Xander like to put it, you would hang out with us in high school and not the jocks. Then you went to war and through military science you turned into a super jock and then rip van winkled it and ended up in today’s world. Xander likes some parts of history and I’m good with computers so we ended up looking into your history after we saw you on the news in New York.” Willow explained as she broke a cookie in to smaller pieces.
“It helps a little. It makes this part easier to explain. During the war I met a gal and fell in love. It’s a long story how I got this but she left me a letter if I was ever found.” Steve said opening a folder sitting next to him on the table that he turned and pushed toward Willow.
After reading the letter twice Willow looked up with tears forming, “You have a daughter Steve. Have you found her?”
“I had a friend help me find her. They got me a name and address here in Sunnydale.” Steve said thinking how quickly Tony Stark started looking after he showed him the letter.
“Xander. He’s your grandson.” Brightened Willow guessed, having been wondering why Captain America out of the uniform had become Xander’s friend.
Pulling more papers out of the folder, “Actually Sheila was the name given to my daughter and I met her a couple of days ago on her book tour. I talked her into a blood test to verify if we are related.”
“I’m guessing she declined further contact with you no matter what the results indicated.” Willow said seeing Steve stumble on what to say next.
“She did. Do you want to know what the results are Willow?”
“Do you know what they are?” Willow asked hoping for both a match and not a match. A match might mean she would have family further than her parents and not a match might mean someone who chooses to be her friend, if he chose to stay in contact.
“No. Either way I want to be and stay your friend. But I do hope it says yes. I want to call you family.” As Willow reached for the envelope Steve held his breath.
She looked up from the paper and stared at Steve for what seemed like a long time until he thought he was about to explode.
“Hi Grandpa.”
Willow laughed as Steve jumped up, knocked a chair over, and pulled her tight in a hug.
