“So why would Steve Rogers be standing in front of this house every night for the last three nights?”
Steve jumped, looking around for the source of the voice. Who ever they were, they were observant seeing him there the last few nights and to see who he is.
“Who’s asking?” Steve asked watching a young man walk up from a shadow at the side of the house.
“Someone who thinks of this place as home. Why is an avenger on this lawn staring at the house deep in thought.” The young man asked standing next to Steve.
Steve turned from the house to look at him. “How do you know who I am?”
“Someone called me the one who sees. If something interests me I remember it, and when staying alive and uninjured is helped by knowing your surroundings you learn to pay attention. I’m Xander.” Xander explained holding out his hand.
“It’s good to meet you Xander. I’m Steve, but you know that. How long have you lived here?” Steve asked pleased by the firm handshake he received.
“Oh I don’t live here, but I know the folks who do. Why are you here?”
“You don’t think I’m an imposter, a fake Steve wearing the uniform?” Astonished Steve repeated what many people had accused him of.
“Nope. Steve Rogers, Captain America, missing in action World War 2, now standing on the sidewalk trying to put off explaining why he’s been staring at this house.” Xander said rocking back and forth from heels to toes.
“I have a child. One night with the woman I loved, and now a letter from her that says we had a child and they were adopted. I got someone to track them down and they live here.”
Xander turned from Steve to look at the house. “You’re wondering if they know they’re adopted, would they want to meet you, do you deserve to meet them.”
Xander ignored the shock and sputtering as Steve tried to talk. “Someone in that house would like to meet you, and yes you do deserve to know them. Is Sheila or Ira your kid? And Steve, you’re a grandfather.”
For the first time since he went into Stark’s prest-o change-o box Steve was breathless.
