New To The Neighborhood - 3

Nathan startled out of his sleep. It took him just a few minutes to identify what had awoken him.

“You getting the door?” the sleepy voice of his wife inquired.

“Can’t imagine who it is,” Nathan grumbled as he levered himself out of bed.

He stu mbled his way through the house to the front door.

Peering through the peep hole, he blinked several times before he identified the young woman as Dawn Summers.

Shaking off the last remnants of sleep, he opened the door. “Dawn?”

“Hi Nathan. Is Raine home tonight?”

Instantly alert, Nathan stepped aside to let her in. His quirky neighbors had managed to train both he and Raine to no longer invite people in verbally. It was strange, but the way they winced and tensed every time eight of the Jackson’s said ‘come in’, it was an easy change to make. “I’ll get her.”

Flicking on a few lights, he made his way back to the bedroom. “Raine,” he called softly. “Baby, the girls next door need you again.”

Raine let out a sigh and climbed out of bed. It wasn’t the first time the Summers sisters had needed their aide, and it wouldn’t be the last. Both Jacksons had some idea of what was really going on, but given their professions and what they deal with on a daily basis, they were willing to remain ignorant of the details. The Summers sisters understood and respected that choice. Every now and then they woldgive the couple some recommendations, but it was mostly a taboo subject. At times like this, though, the bridge needs to be gapped.

“What’s wrong Dawn?” Raine asked, suddenly more alert when she saw the concern on the young woman’s face.

“I need your help at home. It’s Buffy.”

Raine tensed. “You know she’ll have to go to the hospital if it’s serious.”

Dawn twisted her hands. “I don’t think it will get to that point. I just… I can’t do this myself, Please just come. Mr. Jackson may need to come too,” she finished.

In just a few minutes, the couple were following their young neighbor next door,
Dawn opened the door and ushered them through.

“Living room,” she said, closing the door behind them.

Stepping into the room, the couple exchanged a concerned glance. They understood why Buffy couldn’t go to the hospital, but neither was sure they were ready for this.

After a moment to gather themselves, they entered the room, ready to help Buffy and not ask too many questions.

Two hours later, they once again climbed into bed, the couple, by agreement did not discuss anything they saw or suspected. That was something that could wait for daybreak. In the meantime, they would just hold each other.
