Buffy sat in her room looking at the phone, hands folded in her lap to hide their shaking.

Ding would be calling soon and, much as she didn’t want to say anything since he had his own issues, she needed to discuss what she’d learned with him.  She needed to feel his arms around her, but more than that, she needed to speak to someone with an outside perspective.

On the other hand, she didn’t want to involve him in this mess, not after the way Glory tossed her around, not when he’d only recently found out about her world. The fact he was still with her still floored her.  As he had said, though, he would take care of the human evil and leave the rest to her.

The phone rang, startling her. Taking a deep breath, she pasted on a smile and answered. “Hello.”

“Hey Buffy it’s Ding. How are you today.”

“Oh, you know…”  She cringed as words failed her and silence fell. This was not how she wanted this to go.

“Tell me everything that’s going on,” Ding replied, suddenly sounding all business.

Buffy took a deep breath and explained everything from the strange mental cases to the weird knights to Dawn’s existence to the Watcher's being annoying and finally to facing a god.

When she finished she waited with bated breath as silence hung heavy over the line.

“Let me talk to Mr. C. If nothing else, I can take some leave to at least be there with you.”

Releasing the breath she'd been holding, Buffy felt her heart swell with love for this man. Then the fear began. “Ding. I don't know. It's dangerous...”

“And what I do isn't?” he asked, humor lacing his words.

“Well... uh...” Buffy stuttered. She couldn't disagree. His job generally had him doing things that made her cringe and worry. Finally she sighed and decided to go with her heart. “I need you, Ding. There's nothing I want more than to feel your arms around me and you standing at my side, but this isn't your fight.”

“I know, Buffy. But I can still stand by your side. I kind of love you, you know.”

Buffy laughed at the way he said it. They'd admitted their feelings pretty early on and were now letting them grow. “I love you too. Go talk to John and let me know. I'll make sure the guest room is ready and Mom has your favorites on-hand.”

“I'll call back soon.”

Hanging up the phone she felt some of the tension that had been eating at her ease.

Ding stepped back into Jack Ryan's office where he and John Clark had been meeting. He knew it would be pointless to hide his worries and could only smile wryly when Jack asked, “What's wrong.”

It took him a while to explain everything Buffy had told him, but he knew he'd made the right decision as soon as his friends and co-workers began to throw out plans, solutions and go over contacts that might be useful.

An hour later, with some general plans in place and the knowledge that John and Jack would continue working on the problem before John came out to join him, Ding stepped out of the office and called Buffy.

(the next day)

“Come in Yusef,” Jack greeted, rising to shake his counterpart - and freind's - hand. “May I get you something to drink?”

“Perhaps some coffee if you still make it the way you were taught.”

Jack's smile broadened. “Of course,” he replied. “I may not be able to share the secret, but at least I learned the proper way to make it.”

The two men chatted for a few minutes before Yusef decided to move things along. “As much as I enjoy catching up with you, Jack, this is not the reason you called. What's going on?”

Shifting uncomfortably in his chair, Jack decided to just dive in. “We've known each other for quite a while. In that time, you've related a number of stories that I always took to be just that - stories.” He met his friend's eyes dead on. “They weren't just stories, though, were they?”

Yusef set his cup down and leaned back, studying the man across from him. “They are stories, but they are true.”

Jack sighed, though out of relief or to prepare himself, he couldn't tell. “We have a situation brewing, one that I'm hoping you'll be able to help with, or at least provide some guidance.” Seeing the protest forming, he raised his hand to cut off the protest. “It's not for me and it could save this and countless other worlds.”

“What is this problem?”

“There's a hellgod in Sunnydale, California who is planning on opening up a rift between all dimensions. The results will be the total destruction of all dimensions.”

There was a moment of silence. “There is only one of whom I can think that would be able to help.”

Jack nodded. “The Slayer is already on-site fighting. She's facing more than just the hellgod, though. There are knights after something called the Key which they believe she is protecting, so they are after her and she has no real information to work with.”

“There are people who help her.”

Jack snorted. “The Watcher's Council?” A small smirk graced his face as he saw he'd shocked his friend. “This Slayer broke from them. They're playing games with her and not giving her anything, if they even know anything.” He saw the anger grow on Yusef's face, the same anger he felt at such games when the world was on the line.

“Tell me everything and I will see what I can do.”

(four days later)

John Clark stepped onto the porch of 1630 Revello Drive. Despite how dire he knew the circumstances to be, he couldn't help but feel good about what he was doing. Whoever Jack's friend was had come through big for them and with only one stipulation - they wanted to meet Buffy when she was victorious.

Knocking on the door, his smile broadened a little when he spotted Buffy on the other side.

She smiled. “Hi John. It's good to see you again.

(two weeks later)

Buffy shifted nervously and tugged on her dress. This really wasn't her thing, but it needed to be done.

Without the help of these men - men who were considered “enemies” of her country - this latest saga might have had a very different outcome. Instead, Dawn was safe, the world was safe, Glorificus was gone forever, she and Ding were closer than ever, her mom had gotten treatment from the best doctors thanks to Dr. Ryan, Jack's wife, and all would be well.

Now all she had to do was face one of her biggest fears.

“Relax, you'll be fine,” Ding assured, squeezing her hand and smiling down at her.

Buffy couldn't help but feel a little more confident and returned his smile. “Thanks.” Turning her attention back to the room where everyone waited, she took her first step forward.
