“Dubbie, what in the name of Roger Rabbit is going on here?” Her boss’ voice over her shoulder startled Dubbie and she jumped.

“&*#@, boss, warn a girl,” Wendy Watson swore, turning attention to the Middleman, who had suddenly appeared from God knows where.

“Language, Dubby!” the Middleman admonished her, drawing up alongside her and taking in the scene in front of them. “And a Middleapprentice should be aware of her surroundings at all times, even when she’s not on the job.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Wendy muttered, feeling slightly ashamed. It’s just that the sun was so nice and the argument in front of her so ridiculous, it was hard to pay attention to anything else.

“So what are Lacey and that strange woman arguing about so passionately?” the Middleman inquired again, gesturing somewhat helplessly at the scene before them.

“Well, Lacey was performing some of her confrontational spoken word performance art, condemning the use of bunnies as food fodder when this woman comes up and starts arguing with her about how evil bunnies are,” Wendy explained. She grinned. “I’ve never seen Lacey’s performances get so confrontational before.”

The Middleman frowned, studying the strange woman, before exclaiming, “Shades of velveteen, Dubbie, do you know who that is?”

“No. Should I?” Wendy asked, puzzled. She didn’t remember that woman’s face from any of the reading materials she’d been assigned recently.

“That, Dubbie, is none other than Anyanka, one of the most feared vengeance demons in all the dimensions,” he explained, looking worried. “She’s infamous for granting wishes of women scorned, heedless of the consequences. What could she be doing here? And why haven’t we had any warning?”

“Well, there’s one way to find out.” With that, Wendy marched purposefully towards her best friend/roommate and the recently revealed demon. “Hi, I don’t think we’ve been introduced,” Wendy interrupted, getting between the two women. “I’m Wendy and this is Lacey.”

The woman frowned, clearly not quite sure what to make of this. “My name is Anya. I’m new in town,” she finally said.

“Not Anyanka, bringer of vengeance and avenger of women scorned?” Wendy asked, purposefully ignoring the pained look on her boss’ face. What, he had to know she was going to go with the direct approach, right? And it’s not like Lacey didn’t already realize that her job was three different shades of weird.

Anya scowled. “I was, before that Watcher destroyed my gem. Now I’m just a pathetic human, trapped in this dimension without any chance of reclaiming my former powers.”

Well, that put a spin on things. Wendy looked up to her boss and raised an eyebrow. He raised one in return, and that’s all the answer Wendy needed.

“I know somebody who might be able to help,” Wendy said, holding out her hand. “Not with the vengeance powers, but with the adjusting to being human part.”

“Are there bunnies?” Anya asked suspiciously, sending a glare over at Lacey’s sign.

Wendy thought carefully about Roxie’s fashion halfway house for demons. “Not that I remember.”

“Very well. Lead me to this place you think will assist in my transition.” Wendy grabbed Anya’s elbow and led her away from where her roommate and her boss were very obviously making goo-goo eyes at each other. She’d rather deal with Roxie than that.

“So, why the bunnies?” Wendy asked, trying to make conversation.

“Well, for starters, they have twitchy noses…”
