Uncle John
By Beriaearwen

Buffy made her way up the stairs to the apartment - flat - her uncle shared with his “unique” roommate. Though she would never admit it, she had read her uncle’s blog about Sherlock Holmes and had been impressed, not by the way the deductions worked, but because her uncle, who she knew had to be pretty remarkable, managed to remove himself almost entirely from the story. Still, after the past few months where she had to play secret identity girl, she could understand the unsung hero thing a bit better. She just wished her had been unseen as well.

Still, this was better than the asylum her father recommended, though she vaguely wondered if this Sherlock person didn’t belong in one.

Knocking on the open door, she stuck her head in.

Two heads turned to look at her from where they were hovering over a computer screen.

“Buffy!” her uncle greeted straightening and smiling at her.

“Uncle John,” she returned, her eyes flickering to the other man before returning to her uncle. “Mrs. Hudson helped me settle in.”

“You’re Buffy?” the young man asked, studying her intently from head to toe.

Buffy felt a little thrown by his examination but wasn’t about to back down. She’d faced worse examinations earning her stripes among the popular crowd at school. Ignoring the young man who her uncle had yet to introduce. “Do you have anything planned? If not, I was thinking maybe we could take a tour…”

“Fascinating,” the younger man interrupted, causing Buffy to turn toward him and John to close his eyes in resigned frustration.

“Not now, Sherlock<” he admonished.

Sherlock ignored him and kept talking. “You’re an obviously intelligent young woman, but hide your intelligence. You’re very fashion conscious, but have gone through something recently and have not placed as much emphasis on those same clothes you likely coveted. At 1.## Meters tall…”

Buffy felt her annoyance grow and made a cutting motion with her hand. “Look. Sherlock was it? It’s really rude to interrupt a conversation like that. I was talking to my uncle. Besides I don’t speak tweedish so unless you plan on translating that into American, don’t bother.” She noticed his mouth drop open and felt a small spark of victory as she turned back to her uncle. “So. Plans?”

The surprise at Sherlock’s silence faded slightly from his face as he looked at his niece. “Yes. I need to spend a few hours at the clinic today. You could come with me, there’s a definite need for help there, though nothing too exciting. Or perhaps Sherlock could take you around and show you the sights.”

Sherlock started to say something, but Buffy spoke over him. No way was she going to spend more time than she had to with the weirdo her uncle minded. Especially because she suspected he might figure out that she wasn’t as delusional as people thought about the vampires.

“Sounds great. Helping people is always of the good,” she said, stepping next to her uncle and slipping her arm through his, the movement causing her back to turn toward Sherlock. “So, tell me more about this clinic,” she requested, moving toward the door, urging her uncle to keep up.

With an amused smile on his face, John complied.
