Summary: Buffy Has a chat with a Reader.
Sitting in her room Buffy looked up at the vent-grate and spoke, “I know you’re there albatross.”
River opened the vent she’d made a hinge out of and dropped into the room. “Sneaking around someone who can hear her breath is... problematic.”
Buffy smirked, “Now you know how everyone else feels when you feel their mind without trying. Do you know why they did that too you?”
River nodded very fast, stopping only when she started to talk, “They wanted something that doesn’t exist. They refused to believe the stories and thought they could replicate the results. They didn’t understand, couldn’t, wouldn’t.”
“They didn’t understand why science cannot create a Slayer,” Buffy reasoned with a sigh.
River’s eyes snapped to Buffy and nodded slowly. “Could only create pale imitation, a bad mirror, coated in film. She knows the dance but cannot replicate the motions. Has the skill but not the strength to use it. Failure after failure. Tried people wouldn’t be missed but didn’t work. Tried genius reader and only made her broken.”
Buffy stopped her exercises and was holding River’s head in the blink of an eye. “You’re not broken. You are partially right though, they cannot create replicate something they don’t even begin to understand but you weren’t a failure. Little albatross, what are you?”
“A pale imitation,” River replied, clearly not understanding what she was being asked.
Buffy placed a hand on River’s forehead pushing her mind into the reader’s. Normally she would ask permission first, but she knew River would grant it.
Buffy looked around at the chaos surrounding the core of River’s mind. She looked to her side and found River standing there. “This is my mind.”
Buffy nodded, “Indeed it is, this is what happened to it because of those doctors. However, somehow I don’t think they meant for that to happen.” She paused, pointing at three cages with three River’s in them. One that stood, emotionless, in her cage. Waiting for something to happen. One that faced Buffy, but kept her head down in a picture of submission. The last that was smiling like a regular person, drawing on a pad of paper. “Now, if I’m not wrong they meant to create this one,” Buffy said, pointing at the emotionless River.
River nodded, it was the part of her mind she was most afraid of, “The weapon, pointed at a target and ordered to kill.”
Buffy nodded and gave the younger girl a warm smile. “Yes. In the process they tried to destroy this one, the one of you as a sane and happy little girl. Normal for lack of a better word.”
“They used whips, and needles, and knives and drugs,” River said getting slightly hysterical until Buffy’s hand touched her shoulder.
Shushing the quasi-slayer Buffy spoke quietly. “It’s ok, they can’t hurt you here. This is your mind. You’re a very strong girl River, to resist as well as you did, and you know how and why.”
River pointed to the last River, who was still in a submissive posture to Buffy. “The one I don’t understand.”
Buffy nodded slowly, that much she expected. The reader was very cerebral, why would she understand the least cerebral part of herself? “Then let’s help you understand. This is a person all healthy human being’s have, Reavers only having only theirs have been driven mad, and weapons do not. Do you know what it is?”
“No.” River denied shaking her head in confusion.
“It’s the primitive side. We call ourselves sophisticated and civilized but we still have instinct, still have base desires, emotion, urges. This, is your instinctual side. I suppose you can guess why she won’t stop bowing to me now, can’t you.”
River cocked her head to the side, with the new information about the last caged River the reader could begin to make a hypothesis. “She pays respect to you because you are powerful, and a protector, while she is not powerful and wishes to be protected.”
Buffy nodded, happy River got the idea so easily, “Exactly. That is the truth of the animal kingdom. Not that the strong dominate the weak, but that the protectors protect those who wish to be protected. Now that we’ve found the three in your mind, do you know which one you are?”
River cocked her head, “I am none of them, and all of them. I’m the reader, a part of what they made me, a part of what everyone has, and a part of what I was. I am not whole, the final part is missing.”
Buffy simply smiled at the smaller, Buffy had finally grown after becoming a full demon to the skyscraping height of five-foot eight, “Then we’ll have to figure out why it’s missing won’t we? Now, don’t open the cages just yet, we aren’t sure what would happen, but organize the place around them. Maybe it will help you keep control when the river pours in.”
River nodded and the pair were back in Buffy’s room again.
Buffy smiled at River and waved her hand back toward the vent. “Go on. Go back to your bunk and try to sleep. I’ll see you in a couple days.”

A/N: Shortest chapter so far, but only because I couldn't slice it into either the one before or the one after without going over on words. Have no fear, next chappy is longer.
