Summary: There are distinct jurisdictional lines in their business and one particular ATF team is about to cross them. Buffy was going to let it go until she saw one of the team members.

“The problem is the local ATF team is getting a little too close to the truth."

Buffy withheld a sigh. It was never easy working with government agencies. Even with the understandings they had with various government officials, the agents themselves rarely wanted to let things go once they started working on them. Buffy had heard rumblings about the tenacity of this
particular ATF team and it didn't please her.

"They haven't found anything in our jurisdiction yet, but they're getting close," Leah, the
head of the Western US branch stated.

"Do you know who's on the team?"

Images started to flash across the monitor and Buffy blinked in surprise. "This one is mine.
I'll take care of it."

"Buffy is that?" Dawn started before her sister cut her off.

"It is."

There was a moment of silence before Dawn continued. "I'm coming with so if it goes well I
can see him too."

Buffy neither agreed nor disagreed knowing if she didn't voluntarily allow Dawn to come, her
not-so-little-anymore sister would find her own way. "Next item," she prompted.

Three days later saw Buffy in the elevator on her way to meet with the Team Leader of ATF Team
7. Their director was currently unavailable, but Buffy needed them to back off immediately.

They were getting too close to things well out of their jurisdiction.

Slipping out of the elevator, she walked down the hall, purpose in her ever stride, an air of
command and power surrounding her.

She smirked inwardly as she watched an agent nearly trip as he came out from behind his desk
to greet her. She had to admit, he was nice to look at, even if he was a foot taller than her
in spite of her heels.

"Well, hello, there. My name is Buck Wilmington. How may I help you?" he greeted with an
undeniably charming smile.

Shaking his offered hand, she replied. "Buffy Summers to see Chris Larabee."

"Why don't you have a seat right here," he said, guiding her to one of the two chairs sitting
outside the closed door of the smaller office. "And I'll see if Agent Larabee is free."

She watched as he slipped into the smaller office and didn't even try not to eavesdrop. While
she listened to Agent Wilmington inform Agent Larabee of her arrival, she scanned the larger
office area.

There were six desks set up reflecting six very different personalities. It took her only a
few seconds to identify which one belonged to him. Obviously he and two others were out of
the office. The remaining two people caused her to suppress another smile. They were trying
very hard not to stare and evaluate her, but she could easily read their curiosity.

The one who was doing a better job hiding his curiosity was a few years older than her. He
looked to be about the same height as Agent Wilmington and easily as attractive, but his warm brown eyes and dark skin set him apart. A very small part of herself sighed at the sight of the picture on his
desk. She was probably one lucky woman.

The other agent reminded her more of a puppy. He was young, but no more so than Dawn.

Obviously he knew what he was doing if he had a place on this team.

Before she could think any further, she heard the conversation in the office come to an end and
prepared herself to enter.

A moment later the door opened and Agent Wilmington ushered her in, providing introductions
before leaving, closing the door behind him.

“What's going on?”

Buck, Nathan and JD, spun around, startled at the voice and tried not to look guilty as the other three members of their team entered their office.

“Who's that?” Vin asked, his eyes locked on the scene in the office; the same scene that had captivated his three teammates.

All six men turned and blatantly watched the scene. They could see Chris' face, but not that of the woman. All of them had been in enough dangerous situations combined with their training to read the body language.

What they were reading fascinated them, and left them with the faintest hint of worry.

It was then JD opened his mouth. “It's like watching a predator mating dance.”

That earned him two snorts of disbelief, an eye-roll, a head shake and a slap to the back of the head.

“Just a power play,” Buck stated.

“And I do believe Mr. Larabee may have met his match,” Ezra drawled.

When they saw Buffy's shoulders relax and Chris' expression turn into a scowl, they quickly shuffled back to their desks.

Having completed their conversation and getting Agent Larabee's agreement to drop the case entirely, she picked up her satchel and brought up the final reason she was there.

“Agent Larabee,” she began, her voice light and friendly. When she only received a glare from him she managed to suppress the urge to roll her eyes. “If you would indulge me for a few minutes, I noticed my cousin arrive while we were having our discussion. We haven't seen each other in almost ten years and haven't heard from each other in at least seven.”

Chris' protective streak came to the fore as he evaluated the woman before him. “Who's your cousin?”

“Ezra Standish.”

“I should have known,” he muttered under his breath.

Buffy's eyebrow rose at the comment as she wondered exactly what her cousin had done.

“Is he expecting you?”

“No,” Buffy replied. “We, my sister and I, were going to get in touch with him tonight, but since I'm here and he's here...” She trailed off and shrugged.

“Suppose you can't just walk by without acknowledging him,” Chris agreed, still evaluating the woman before him and the threat she posed to his team. He carefully ignored the other part of his brain that had been evaluating her on a different level. It was taking great joy in point out she was exactly his type - blonde, gorgeous, strong and firey. “Might as well get going.”

So saying, he walked around his desk and to the door. Opening the door, he ushered her through.

Stopping beside Buffy, he called, “Ezra. You got a visitor.”

Ezra stood and looked at the petite woman, his brow furrowed for a moment before recognition dawned. “Buffy?” he asked in disbelief before a bright smile spread across his face.

“Ezra,” she returned, mirroring his smile for a moment before quickly covering the distance between them and wrapping him in a hug which he quickly returned.

“Buffy, where? How?”

“Well, I'll be,” Buck intoned amused wonder in his voice. “I didn't think anything could render Ezra speechless.”

Releasing his cousin, Ezra took a half-step back and glared at the taller man. “Very funny Mr. Wilmington.”

“You going to introduce us, Ez?” Vin's quiet voice inquired.

“Certainly. Gentlemen, this is my cousin - “

“Favorite cousin,” Buffy corrected with a grin.

Ezra returned the grin. “Favorite cousin, Miss Buffy Summers. Buffy, these are my co-works. Vin Tanner, Josiah Sanchez, Nathan Jackson, Buck Wilmington, JD Dunne and you already know Chris Larabee.”

Buffy nodded to each man in turn.

“What are you doing here in Denver?” he asked. “It must have been seven years or so since we last spoke.”

“She came to take the Trundle case from us.”

“What!”

“No!”

“Can she do that?”

Buffy waited through the onslaught of disbelieving exclamations. She kept a closer eye on Ezra's reaction. He hid his emotions well, but she could tell he was not happy.

“Enough,” Chris said, immediately garnering silence.

“The case shouldn't have been given to you,” Buffy said. “It's outside your jurisdiction. The gun running is only secondary to the real problem. Had we been aware of your involvement earlier, we could have taken over earlier and let you focus on taking down those who are in your jurisdiction.”

The others were quiet. They all knew how things worked, but none of them were happy about it. Now they knew why she and Chris were arguing.

Seeing that no one had anything more to say and feeling the friendly atmosphere had been ruined, she sighed and turned to face Ezra.

She pulled out a business card. “That's got my cell number on it,” she told him as he took the card. “Dawn and I are in town for at least a few days and would like to get together. Give me a call when you're free and we'll meet up.”

“Of course, Buffy,” Ezra replied, his voice once more friendly.

Hugging her cousin once more, she turned and walked out, glad to have that unpleasantness out of the way. Hopefully Ezra would call soon. She really missed her cousin.

Glancing over her shoulder, she allowed her eyes to drift over the long, lean form of Chris Larabee. When she reached his face, their eyes locked. Buffy offered a smile that promised everything and nothing before stepping in the elevator.

The day certainly wasn't a total loss. And with any luck, Ezra's team leader wouldn't hold a grudge.

End.
