Xander watched Carrie hop back and forth across the driveway as she waited for someone to pick her up for the first day of summer vacation. Xander and Willow had been sitting on lawn chairs in the front lawn watching kids get picked up all day long, slayers, witches, and watchers. Some going home, some traveling with family or friends, some venturing out after graduation before ending up in their assigned cities.
When asked, Carrie had simply said “Granpa will be picking me up.”
“Hey, Carrie is your Grandpa flying in from England? Should we send someone to the airport to pick him up?” Xander asked when Willow went inside to get refills of lemonade and cookies.
“He’s coming in from England but not really flying to the airport. He has his own transportation.” Carrie’s answered climbing up on to a large rock in the lawn.
An unusual noise seemed to be coming from the middle of the street and Willow stopped walking across the lawn to look for the source of the noise. Xander stood up looking around taking a step back when a couple of sparkles and shimmer of rainbow haze appeared and quickly dissipated leaving behind an old bed lurching forward and back. It was an old bed, heavy iron frame, and cream colored blanket swaying from the force of the landing.
“Grandpa!” Carrie shouted leaping across the lawn to land on the bed.
“The Bed!” Willow said pointing to the bed in the street not noticing she had spilled one of the glasses when she pointed.
“Magic bed?” Xander asked.
“The amazing traveling spell actually and it was put on the bed years ago.” The old spry man said walking over to Xander holding a bed knob in his hand.
“There have been rumor and theories about that bed for years. No one could never figure out where it came from, how it traveled, or who controlled it.” Willow said walking up to Xander and the man.
“I’m Paul Rawlins. Miss Price cast the spell on the bedknob and ever since then I’ve been traveling. Carrie’s the only grandchild who still loves traveling on the bed as much as she did on her first ride and the bed will be hers next.” Paul said watching Carrie walk close. “Come on Carrie. Maybe we could get your Grandma to do the substitutiary locomotion spell for us.”
As the bed shimmered out in the same bit of sparkle and colors that it appeared in Xander looked at Willow and poked her shoulder.
“Substitutiary locomotion? It’s only been thought to be impossible for ever. Never to be successfully cast.” Willow breathed shocked at who had picked up one of her students and impossibilities had been shattered.
