“Welcome back to The Midnight Hour. I’m your host, Kitty Norville, and tonight we’re broadcasting from San Francisco, California. I have a special treat for you this Friday night: the reunion of the band, Dingos Ate My Baby. They’re going to talk and then play a few songs for us. But before that, I’m going to take a few of your calls.”
It had been almost one month since my forced outing as a werewolf by Senator Joseph Duke, Dr. Paul Flemming, and Roger Stockton back in Washington. That last full moon, I was kidnapped, forced into a silver painted cage, and made to transform in front of a national audience. You would think that the last thing I would want to do is go back and work on my show again, but that’s exactly what I was doing. In the studio, I was in control. It was my territory, and it allowed me to build up my sense of self that had been violated that night. It made both Wolf and me feel safe, and that’s what I desperately needed right now.
“Rachel, from Los Angeles, you’re on the air.”
“Thanks, Kitty. I just wanted to say hi to the band! I feel old, but I remember watching them play back in Sunnydale...”
I had vague memories of Dingos Ate My Baby. Occasionally, I would get people requesting them, and since they weren’t the recycled pop crap that normally filled the airwaves, I was happy to oblige. They were decent, nothing to write home about, so I was surprised to hear from Ozzie saying that he had been contacted by the band for my San Francisco show. Granted, I was somewhat infamous now as a known werewolf celebrity, but it was still a surprise.
That surprise lasted until I walked into a cafe where I was going to meet the band before deciding whether or not to use them in the show. The first member to arrive was a short, red-headed man, who had a zen-like aura around him. As soon as I shook his hand--rough with musician's callouses--I knew why they had contacted me. I smiled up at my fellow werewolf and gestured for him to sit down.
“Daniel Osbourne,” he introduced himself, sitting across the table from me. “Most people call me Oz.”
“Kitty,” I replied, starting to feel more at ease.
“Better than ‘Bunny’.”
I couldn’t help myself, I laughed. I don’t know if it was the way Oz had said, or if it was just the original response to people hearing my name. It was damn funny.
“Thanks, Rachel. Next on the line is Dawn, from Cleveland. Hi, Dawn.”
“Hey Kitty. I’m a huge fan of your show. Just wanted to say hi to Oz and tell him to get his ass to Cleveland to see everyone before he goes back to Tibet.”
Which is how I found myself hosting the reunion of Dingos Ate My Baby that Friday night. I was actually a little amazed by how many people called in about the band. A lot of nostalgia for a band that was pretty mediocre and pretty OK with it. They played a few of their more popular songs, chatted--well, the lead singer, Devon chatted--, and generally had a pretty decent show.
During the station ID and a commercial break, while the band was packing, up, Oz came over to where I was sitting behind the mike.
“Good show,” I complimented him.
“We’re rusty. Time off does that,” he answered with a shrug. “Not that we were climbing up the charts before.”
“I don’t think your fans really cared that much.”
He was silent for a moment, before he finally answered. “An undeserved ego boost, then.”
I smiled. “Sometimes those are the best ones,” I replied, holding out my hand. “Thanks.” I wasn’t just talking about the show, and I doubted he was either. The similarities didn’t completely add up, but enough of them were there where I could catch them. I was pretty sure that the reunion had been his idea, as well approaching Ozzie for the show. I didn’t need to say it, but that meant a lot to me.
He shook my hand before rejoining the band. I watched them for a moment before the blinking red light brought me back to reality.
"That’s all for now, folks. Thank you for spending last few hours with me tonight, and thanks to Dingos Ate My Baby for playing for us tonight. I invite you to come back next week when we’ll be broadcasting from Dallas and interviewing a Ms. Harper Connelly who can locate the dead. This is The Midnight Hour, and I’m Kitty Norville, voice of the night."
