“Buffy? Are you awake?”
Buffy shot up, looking around frantically. They were still in the crystal cave on the place where they had crash-landed, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan sleeping peacefully nearby. But that’s not what caught her attention. It was that voice, that achingly familiar voice she hadn’t heard in almost ten years.
“Dawn?” she whispered, getting to her feet to look around. “Where are you?”
“I’m right here, Buffy,” her sister answered.
Buffy turned towards the small fire in the center of the cave. “Dawn?” she repeated, looking at the figure on the other side of the flames.
“You left,” Dawn answered sadly, stepping closer to the light. Her face was lit by the flickering firelight, somehow managing to look the same as when Buffy had last seen her and older at the same time. “You didn’t say goodbye.”
Buffy tried to answer but her throat tightened, stiffling any words that she wanted to say. How many times had she replayed that final conversation in her head, wondering if she had acted any differently if she wouldn’t have been suddenly transported to Naboo. Wondered if it was her own fault if she had ended up in this new universe.
“I didn’t mean to, Dawnie,” she finally forced out, her voice hoarse from the effort. “I didn’t mean to leave you.”
Dawn smiled, a sad, wistful look on her face. “I know,” she replied. “But that doesn’t change that you left us.”
“Why are you here?” Buffy asked, desperate to change the conversation. She knew the Jedi had said this place was strong in the Force, but she wasn't Force-sensitive. As much as she didn't want to admit it to herself, she doubted her sister was actually here. This could just be a trick that that tall, red-eyed man might be playing on her, trying to mess with her. Nothing felt right about this entire mess.
“Something dark is coming, Buffy,” Dawn warned her, her voice changing, becoming serious. “And everything is going to change.”
Buffy froze. Something dark is coming. It was the same message her recurring Slayer dreams had been screaming at her since the war began over two years ago, despite her inability to remember the details. Something was coming and it was going to destroy everything in its path.
“I can stop it.” She spoke without thinking, her mind unconciously slipping back into the Sunnydale way of thinking. She was the Slayer, she could...
“You can’t, not even if you tried,” Dawn answered with a shake of her head. “No one can.”
"Then why are you telling me this if I can’t change anything?" Buffy tried to keep from shouting, even though she was starting to suspect her companions couldn't hear her. That this entire thing was less of a waking vision and more of a Slayer dream.
“So you can prepare,” Dawn told her, moving around the fire until she was standing in front of her older sister. “Because you’re still needed to shape the things to come.”
“What things? What are you talking about?”
Dawn smiled and leaned down to whisper in Buffy’s ears. “Don’t be afraid, Buffy. All you need is a little bit of...”
“Buffy? Buffy?”
Buffy cracked open her eyes to see Obi-Wan peering down at her with a worried expression on his face.
“That’s my name,” she grumbled, pushing herself off of the cave floor. “What’s going on?”
“Ahsoka had a vision,” he told her as she brushed the dirt off of her clothes. “We need to find Anakin.”
She looked at him, noting the worried look on his face. It wasn’t only Ahsoka’s vision that had him worried about the missing member of their group. He’d seen something as well.
“Let’s blow this popcicle stand then,” she said, starting to walking towards the entrance of the cave when Obi-Wan grabbed her arm.
“Are you alright?” he asked, scanning her face.
“Fine,” Buffy lied, although she was sure he could see right through it. Only Yoda knew about her Slayer dreams, and part of her thought even that little green elf knowing was one person too many. This was something she needed to work out on her own. Slayer dreams, Slayer problems, right?
Obi-Wan kept looking at her face for another long minute before releasing her arm. “I wonder what trouble Anakin has found himself in this time,” he commented dryly in a tone that did little to hid his anxiety.
“Knowing him, way too much of it,” Buffy replied in a similar tone. She waited until he started walking and took the rear, with Ahsoka leading the way into the planet’s desolate night landscape before following, her mind still on the dream she had just had.
Somehow, Buffy thought as they started their search for Anakin, Dawn or whoever had been wearing her sister’s face’s warning about the coming darkness wasn’t just contained to their current adventure. Something dark was coming, and she prayed that she would be able to meet it when the storm inevitably broke.
