Buffy watched her companion in amusement bordering on alarm.
“Would you like some fries with that salt?” she asked, unable to hold herself in any longer. Across the table, Matt Devlin flashed her a smile. In the months since their initial meeting, she and Matt had struck up a close friendship that Buffy would have in no way expected given their slightly hostile first meeting. They had met several times for coffee, and Matt had quickly found himself introduced to the crazy world that the Scoobies lived in. He took most of it in stride, although he was a little taken aback at Faith, much to everybody’s amusement.
“I think what you mean, Buffy, is if I would like some salt with my chips,” he corrected her, finally putting down the salt shaker. “You know, if you are going to live in London, you really should learn the lingo.”
Buffy made a face at him, but didn’t say anything.
“Real mature, Buffy,” Matt commented as he took a bite of one of his fries. Just because she spent time in the land of tweed didn’t mean she’d go to the dark side, so to speak. She’d keep her Americanisms, thank you very much.
“I try,” Buffy answered with a smile. They ate in companionable silence for a few moments before Buffy decided to get to the topic she was really interested in.
“So how are things with you and Alesha?” she asked after taking a sip from her water. Between her and Dawn, they had managed to extract how Matt felt about the young solicitor working at the CPS, not that it was that hard. It was kinda obvious if you were paying attention.
“It’s, well, it’s complicated,” Matt began before Buffy interrupted him.
“That’s what you said last time,” she pointed out, gesturing with a french fry to emphasize her words. “What’s going on now? I thought you said that the guy she had UST with left.”
“UST?”
“Ugh. Sorry. I’ve been around Andrew and a few of the minis for too long,” Buffy apologized, making a face. “Unresolved sexual tension. At least, that’s what it looked like the one time I joined you all for drinks.”
“So you picked up on that?” Matt asked with a self-deprecating laugh. “Just because James Steel left the CPS doesn’t mean that the situation’s resolved itself.”
“She’s dating him now?”
“Not that I’m aware of, but even if she wasn’t dating him, it’s still complicated,” he protested with a shake of his head. “The potential for conflict of interest for one.”
“I could always get the Council legal team to hire her,” Buffy suggested, snagging one of Matt’s fries. “We need more lawyers of the trust-worthy type.”
“Are you seriously trying to play matchmaker with me and Alesha? Is that what this is all about?”
Buffy smiled at Matt’s surprised tone. He really should know her better by now.
“Well, Dawn was the one who suggested it, but who was I to say no to a good idea?” she answered, her grin becoming wider. “Besides, you both like each other, you’re two consenting adults...”
Buffy was interrupted by the sound of Matt’s cell phone ringing. He opened with a grateful look on his face, most likely from its timely intervention.
“Ronnie?” he answered as he leaned back in his chair. “Really? I’ll be right there.” He closed the phone with a snap and gave Buffy what would have been a apologetic smile had there not been an edge of satisfaction to it.
“Let me guess. You and Ronnie need to go to a crime scene,” Buffy said with a wry smile. Talk about saved by the bell. Well, saved by the phone but it was practically the same thing.
“Isn’t that a shame,” Matt replied, a hint of gloating in his voice as he stood up and grabbed his coat.
Buffy narrowed her eyes slightly before she answered. “Isn’t it just? Tell Ronnie I said hi.”
“I will. I’ll talk to you later.”
And with that, Matt was out the door and on the busy London street. Buffy watched his retreating figure for a moment before a look that many had learned to fear blossomed on her face. Matt was beyond delusional if he thought that she was going to give up that easily. It just meant that she would need to bring in back up for what Dawn had jokingly referred to as Operation: Matchmaker the night before.
Pulling out her cell, Buffy hit the speed dial and waited for the other person to pick up.
“Faith? I need your help.”
