When Anakin turned, when his friend revealed his Sith nature, when Obi-Wan had to face down and destroy the only brother he'd ever known, Kenobi felt the darkness surround him, let his hope die and the light within be shuttered. Taking the babies, he survived because of his sense of duty. Yet duty led to an empty life, even if he knew he was never truly alone due to the Force.

Over time, he felt himself begin to stagnate in this hidden place where he couldn't use his full abilities in the force lest he lead his hunters to himself and the boy.

He existed day to day, week to week.

The war, as with all ward, changed forever those who survived them.

With no way to use his abilities, with no active purpose in his life, those parts left of young Obi-Wan were swiftly disappearing, leaving behind a man none would recognize.

Then she came. When he found her,she needed him, the first in a long time. She needed him to survive, too injured to do so on her own.

As she healed at a remarkable rate, Obi-Wan discovered he could sense her differently than most others. He could feel something inside her that seemed to be hidden, almost frozen. He saw the shadows in her eyes and recognized them as similar to his own. The bits and pieces of her story she let slip in their conversations and in her sleep when the nightmares took hold of her, confirmed to him that Buffy Summers survived experiences not entirely unlike his own. Another part of him, one he thought long dead prodded him that it seemed wrong for her to feel the emptiness, the loneliness he experienced daily.

He felt determination build within him to help her heal, not just physically, but emotionally as well. To his utter shock, within three days, Buffy was up and walking around, almost completely healed.

As she grew stronger, he watched her become more and more restless within the confines of his small home.

This morning he had given her some protective gear and what she called sunscreen, which he supposed was a fairly accurate description as far as it went.

Watching her exit, he turned to complete the breakfast dished and contemplate what he learned that morning from the force.

She, like him, had been alone for too long.

After being surrounded by others - fellow younglings, his master, his padawan - his entire life, having no one around had been trying. Buffy's presence brought his attention to that feeling in himself and within her.

The feeling of loneliness could be changed if they were both willing.

Master Qui-gon used to say “the will of the Force” led him to his strays. Though never one for following that particular trait of his Master, Obi-wan couldn't deny this situation had “will of the Force” written all over it.

With a wry smile at the reminder of a more pleasant past, he finished the last dish and headed outseide.

He found Buffy standing in the sun, obviously lost in thought.

Though he suspected she already knew he was there, Obi-wan reached out and gently squeezed her shoulder, smiling when she turned to look at him.

Buffy returned his smile with a small, genuine smile of her own before looking back at the horizon.

At her smile, Obi-wan felt something inside him spark to life. It took a few moments to identify what it was. When he figured it out, he couldn't help but smile.

Hope.

His hope had been reborn. Not exactly the same as it used to be, but, then, he wasn't the same man he used to be either.

Buffy's arrival may not herald the return of the Jedi order or even the shifting of the force, but, if nothing else, it granted him a new hope that something different, something better, could be reborn from the ashes of his life and his heart.
