Summary: What happens when Dawn meets Riley?
Catherine was lurking in the break room, trying not to be too obvious about watching the door so Riley wouldn’t notice anything was up. On the other side of the room, Greg was doing the same. Dawn would be in with her lunch soon, and she really wanted to catch her reaction to CSI’s newest addition.
This was going to be good, Catherine knew it. Her younger sister’s personality combined with Riley’s attitude meant they would either be best friends or detest each other on sight. Catherine couldn’t quite decide which would be more fun. Detest each other on sight was probably safer for the world at large. Dawn found enough trouble all on her own.
Speaking of which…maybe she could deputize Dawn to break the bad news to Lindsey. Dawn had gleefully indulged Lindsey’s Overnight Sensation craze. Layla Wells had been their favorite contestant. Dawn would take it the way she took most things about Catherine’s job- that blasé, world-weary, seen-it-all, shocked by nothing shrug and calm acceptance. If it wasn’t personal, Dawn didn’t get upset. Lindsey wouldn’t be as calm about it, though.
Ah, here she is finally.
Dawn sashayed in, laden with bags. Catherine decided she must have missed another family shopping outing. Buffy was inhuman when it came to shopping, Dawn could hold her own, and with Lindsey’s inheritance, she could afford to go along on their sprees from time to time. Buffy was responsible enough to make sure her niece wasn’t blowing her money frivolously, so Catherine didn’t worry.
Riley looked up and raised an eyebrow.
“Did you take a wrong turn? This is CSI, not BCBG.”
Dawn wasn’t at all fazed.
“That’s ok, they’re not really my style anyway.”
Greg intervened with introductions before Riley could say anything else.
“Dawn, Riley. Riley, Dawn. Riley is our new CSI.” He tactfully didn’t mention that she was Warrick’s replacement. Dawn had taken the death of her ‘big brother’ hard. Buffy had been the only composed one of the three at the funeral.
“And Dawn is…?” Riley asked pointedly.
“Dawn is Catherine’s kid sister,” Greg answered.
“And not interested in being anyone’s performing monkey tonight,” Dawn added. “Sorry to disappoint, but I met Riley that night you guys were busy with that double homicide out Boulder Highway. She’s cool, we get along just fine. And since she’s the one who clearly wasn’t in on the ‘let’s see if they’ll kill each other’ set-up, she’s the one who gets the double chocolate cake.”
Dawn handed over a cake carrier. Riley grinned as Catherine and Greg’s jaws dropped.
“Hodges tells me Dawn does a ‘wicked awesome’ dessert selection."
Judging by the looks on her co-workers’ faces, for once Hodges had not been exaggerating. She’d tell them later- when she gave in and shared some of the cake after giving everyone else in the lab a slice first- that Dawn had overheard Greg talking to Catherine and decided to turn the tables on them. Catherine’s ‘kid sister’ was a lot of fun.
