Miss Jane Marple (Agatha Christie mysteries)

Despite her title of “Aunt Jane” to so many children, despite her wide array of friends, family and godchildren, very few people knew much about Jane Marple, especially her early years.

Though not an intentional omission on her part, for certainly she would answer questions if anyone bothered to ask, long ago her parents had drilled into her the need to keep quiet about the truth of the world.

Before she ever attended school, Jane could easily recite the truth about the Chosen One as well as identify twenty-seven types of demons by sight and description. For a long time she wished to grow up to be a Watcher like her father before her. When her family were assigned a Slayer, Elenia, they traveled to the continent together, despite her father and the Council's objections, and trained the young woman.

That training and those two years taught Jane more than anything else during the course of her life ever would. She saw evil then, not just in the monster's Elenia fought, but also in the people they ran across, in the governments they dealt with and even in the Watcher's Council her father served.

The education she received in school before, during and after those two years, helped her with her traditional learning, but the early training from her father and the two years with Elenia made an indelible impression on her.

Now, so many years removed from that world, the lessons she learned back then served her well today. Many of the observation techniques taught and the understanding of how evil thought, aided her in finding the truth behind the unfortunate events which seemed to haunt her steps.

Now, looking at the young police inspector with knowing eyes, Jane couldn't help but wonder how she could explain that it was not the milkman's cousin who inspired her leap of logic, but information on Grash'nak demons she read so long ago.
