Notes: I guess I'm doing a lot of exploring into the Marvel Cinematic Universe this time around.  Did anyone think Wanda's Westview chaos would go undetected?

The sign had seen better days.

The chipping wood, fading paint, and clear streaks of old dust and grit told of a sign long past its heyday. Once up a time, a welcome sign this large, with the assortment of embellishments, was one a town could brag about, could say how their city had meaning, had a purpose.  How their town was more important than surrounding ones, deserved to have visitors and businesses travel into their city limits.  There was an old proudness to the sign.

Now, it was as tired as the city they drove into.

“Are you sure this is it?” Buffy asked, glancing at Willow briefly with a raised eyebrow, doubt reverberating in her voice, before glancing back at the road in front of her.  The swaths of dying grass leading directly up to old and decaying houses left little to be desired.  A town this old and dying was not what they expected to find when the Coven - and Willow - felt the explosion of magic a few weeks ago.

Though, perhaps, the sleepy old town was exactly what the being that created the magic wanted.  Some place out of the way, overlooked, forgotten in a world that was just beginning to rebuild itself.  Even the Council was still in the process of tracking down all members who had been blipped, which is why it took so long to investigate the sudden display of magic.

That’s what Giles said, at least.  But a part of Willow, a part she just couldn’t brush away, felt as if the magic purposefully kept them from coming.

So as Buffy drove into the township, Willow searched the dusty streets and tired buildings for anything that could give her an answer of what type of magic would be powerful enough to keep her from exploring it right away.  “I’m definitely getting some oogie magic vibes here.”

“Oogie bad?” Buffy asked, turning slowly into a parking spot in front a cute little cafe.  “Or oogie weird?”

“Little bit of both,” Willow admitted as she unbuckled her seatbelt and pushed the door open, sighing slightly in relief as she stretched her muscles after the long car ride.  As she stepped towards the cafe, her hair prickled on the back of her neck and she glanced around uneasily.

“Are you getting a ‘you are not welcome’ kinda feeling here?” The blond Slayer muttered quietly, her eyes sharply darting around.  Willow nodded, pressing her lips together before attempting a smile as they walked into the cafe, a bell tinkling brightly as entered the building.  A few glares from people already seated were thrown their way, but anytime Willow tried to catch anyone’s gaze, they quickly turned away and ignored the visitors.  Sliding into a chair, Buffy muttered, “Definitely feeling like I’m waiting to be sacrificed.”

A waitress stopped by briefly, tossing two menus on the table before brusquely walking away.  Buffy and Willow exchanged another look, slowly grabbing the menus and glancing them over.

“Well, hello there strangers,” called a woman approaching their table, her coiffed brown hair cascading down her back in perfect loose curls, her sweater and peter-pan collar combo over a perfectly matched pant almost eerily on point.  Pulling a chair up for herself, she sat down at their table, a bright smile on her face.  “We don’t get many visitors these days.  What brings you two to Westview?”

Buffy seemed a little startled by the sudden bombardment of friendliness after the distinct persona non grata feel from the rest of the town, but gave the woman a bright smile of her own.  “Just passing through.  We’re headed to visit a fried and needed a place to stop at eat.”

“You picked the right place to take a load off,” the woman laughed, glancing around the rest of the room as if oblivious to the true unwelcome from those around them.  “I’m Agnes.  And you are…?”

A faint buzzing, not a sound, but a feel of magic, crept up and down Willow’s spine as she allowed Buffy to continue the conversation with Agnes.  Focusing in on the feel of the buzzing, Willow reached out with her magic, running it through the street of the town, up and down buildings, and around all the people in the near vicinity.  Feelings of pain, of anger, of bitterness almost overwhelmed her, but that was all pushed away as she felt an echo of magic that was natural to the area.

No, this was…different.

It seems to seep out of every building, every blade of grass, every person as far as Willow’s magic could reach.  But most strongly, it reverberated off of the woman sitting with them, laughing at something Buffy had just said.

Agnes was a witch.  A witch with bound powers.

“I’d better get going.  Who knows what my husband’s gotten up to while I was gone,” Agnes said with a wink, pushing her chair out and standing up.  “If you need a place to stay for the night, I’ve always got room at my place.  Don’t want to be unneighborly.”

With one last laugh, she was gone as quickly as she had appeared.  Buffy turned back to Willow, cocking her head slightly to one side.  Willow leaned forwards, lowering her voice to almost a whisper.  “Her powers have been bound, but she didn’t cause all of this.  Someone else did.  I don’t even think that’s her normal self.  I can’t place it, but it feels like…you remember the chaos demon that attacked you a few years ago?  It feels like that.  Pure chaos magic.”

“Giles is gonna flip,” Buffy muttered, wrinkling her nose.  “Bound magic, chaos magic, mind control?  Feels like a Hellmouthy problem with the Hellmouth.”
