Dawn rubbed her face as she looked at Lucifer. They had exchanged the broad strokes. Amenadiel and Goddess interrupting from time to time.
Goddess was in the body of a deceased woman and went by Charlotte. Amenadiel was a fallen angel, following his little brother’s footsteps and defying their father.
“I never thought…” Dawn breathed. “I mean, we always hoped, but it seemed out of reach.”
“What do you mean?” Charlotte asked.
“God, the divine. We’ve spent the last twenty years in the trenches, fighting vampires and demons and evil. We see so much ugly, so much that a single girl was supposed to fight, we gave up that there was anything higher. And I truly have no idea how I feel about it.” She frowned as the first rays of the sun started to peak over the hills. She pulled out her phone and texted Connor to keep him from looking for her.
“What are you doing?” Amenadiel asked.
“Texting a friend,” she replied. “So that the crazy dumbass doesn’t come looking for me.” She looked at Charlotte. “So you think that we don’t have access to any of our powers. That taking over human forms limited them.”
“Yes.”
“That would explain why I keep getting kidnapped or almost killed.”
“But you are able to speak and read languages you’ve never studied,” Amenadiel reminded her. “You don’t remember being the Key or the Barrier. Maybe, what leaks through is all subconscious.”
Charlotte nodded her agreement.
“Even if this has been the least violent night in a long time… I’ve never felt like I was closer to getting answers about what I was before I was who I am.” She frowned at her words. “And that sentence suggests I need sleep.”
“Lucifer will take you home,” Charlotte volunteered her son.
Lucifer gave his mother a look for a beat then looked at Dawn. “I will.”
“Thanks, but I can just have someone pick me up.”
“Don’t be silly,” Lucifer stood and gestured her to follow. “Can’t have you dying and all the answers to Mum’s questions disappearing.”
“Okay,” Dawn agreed.

“You don’t really live here,” Lucifer said.
Dawn felt her cheek’s burn but kept her head held high. “The Council does not have unlimited funds. Not all of us can live and breathe like money comes of being handsome. I have to eat and choosing to live in California instead of England or Ohio makes the money not stretch as far.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Same reason you are. I got tired of living by someone else’s rules for my life. I wanted more.” She looked at her craptastic rental house. “It just wasn’t a material ‘more’.”
“You are one of the most powerful beings on the planet. You should act like it. Live like it.” He reached into his jacket pocket and started to extract his money clip.
Dawn pressed her hand over his, stilling his movements. “I don’t know if you can understand this, Lucifer, but meeting you and Amenadiel and Charlotte gives me hope that there are answers to my questions. But they aren’t going to be found in a better house or by getting things I haven’t earned.” She retracted her hand and picked her purse off her lap. “I have lived my last fifteen years like I was mortal, for all we know, I am. And I have mortal and immortal - and now divine - friends and acquaintances. Life, for whatever its worth, is a series of choices. Left or right. Right or wrong. Wisdom or rage. I choose to have hope. Not that things get better, I honestly don’t think humanity has the capacity for that, but that what I do matters. The choices I make, the people I help, the demons I stop.”
Lucifer frowned at her, his mouth open slightly. “Why?”
“If you have to ask, you won’t understand the answer.” She shifted, giving him a chaste kiss on the cheek. She got out of the car. She handed him her card. “In case you are in need of assistance.”
He took it and watched her walk into the rundown house of a bad neighborhood. Her green dress catching the morning sun and making her look like she sparkled.
Once the door shut behind her, he looked at the card.
