I read that the other day - neat article. I think the possibility of magical thinking is the price we pay for pattern recognition. People who don't see enough patterns are, well, dumb. People who see patterns where there aren't any are superstitious. Too much in either direction would be more dangerous than a little of each, so evolution splits the difference and puts us right in between, so that we miss some patterns and make up others.
