Summary:
Prompt: The group bring back a trunk of clothes from a recent supply run. Some of the things found in it are two sets of perfectly serviceable tuxedos. Daryl and Glenn put them on and slow dance in the field, under the stars. Holding each other and swaying like the world hadn't gone to shit.
Notes: I just cried and wept while writing this and I don't even know what I did.
"Look at what we have here!" Andrea shouted as everyone came to see what she and Glenn had brought back from a supply run. She handed a box of fresh food to Patricia while Rick and Shane were admiring the new variety of sharp objects for weapons they'd brought along and clips for their firearms.
Andrea pulled Carol in front of a luggage and she spoke quietly, "It's okay. Have a little fun."
Carol opened the luggage and she gasped in surprise, smiling breathlessly, overjoyed. She promised herself she'd have a great time that night. The case was full of neatly folded, some sparkly and some made-of-silk evening gowns.
Rick browsed their catch behind her and joked, "Well, looky here. Might've stumbled on a suitcase that had coats and black ties in it?"
Glenn, who was unloading their stuff from the truck, threw a suitcase at Rick's feet and he smiled as Rick's attempt at sarcasm fell flat.
The deputy opened the case and felt up the black fabric of an expensive looking tux. The joy didn't end there when Glenn showed everyone a case full of iced Chardonnay.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are having a party tonight!"
After the most of the hassle was over, Carol found her way to Daryl who was standing further from everybody else, keeping everyone in sight.
"Why don't you join us?" Carol asked, and Daryl clenched his teeth when he looked at the red dress along with a black suit she had in her hold.
"Nah, I better keep watch, make sure no one gets out of range when they're drinking," Daryl crossed his arms to show he didn't care about any of it, even though he knew Carol knew him better than that.
Carol watched him patiently and replied, "You sure you don't want a few drinks?"
She handed over the suit and Daryl took it without a growl. Carol's smile was precious. "Dress code applies. If you change your mind."
The women started to doll up for the big night and the men tried to fit into their tuxedos. Hershel's family had a few suits of their own but they had been moth-eaten for quite some time.
The sky had darkened and Hershel raised a toast in celebration of life. Carol felt sad for Daryl not being with them, but she didn't dare to go outside to look for him.
She happened to look into the hall from the living room and see Daryl wearing a white collar shirt with a black tie and a black coat with matching pants. She quickly paced to him and patted Daryl on the shoulder, and he smiled a little.
"You look beautiful," he told Carol who didn't know how to take the compliment. She asked him to join the others but Daryl didn't move. He browsed around the living room to know everyone was in place, except for Glenn.
Carol went over to get a bottle of wine for him and Daryl thanked her, but Carol thanked him as well for being there for her.
"'Is nothing. You go now, have fun."
Carol smiled and turned away until she heard Daryl, "Where's Glenn?"
She turned to him in shock, holding her mouth in fear in case something had happened to him. She went and told Rick, who shouted at Daryl, "He's at watch! In the back, near the barn!"
Daryl nodded at Carol in appreciation and left outside, taking his crossbow with him.
He walked around the house and towards the field until he found Glenn, but stopped for a minute.
"Jesus. How can I not go there, and ask him," the boy was talking to himself with a wine glass in his other hand, a shotgun in the other.
"Ask who what?"
Glenn turned around flailing, the wine glass flying off his grasp and a shotgun ready, breaking glass the only sound in the moment. He breathed out heavily after he found out it was Daryl. He took another deep breath when he realized he was wearing a suit.
"Wow. That's the whitest shirt I've ever seen you wear."
"Problem?"
"No, no," Glenn stuttered, and stared at the view. He had to look away to swallow; Daryl was very handsome. It didn't make Glenn feel any better when Daryl walked closer and he could see him better.
Glenn wasn't the only one with an amazed expression on his face.
"You combed out your hair," Daryl muttered in the moonlight, avoiding eye contact.
"Yep."
Glenn didn't want to ask himself why Daryl even noticed such a thing and since his face was already red because of how Daryl looked in the fine suit, he didn't want to embarrass himself more by talking.
"I brought something for ya," Daryl raised the bottle of wine in his hand and he set two glasses on the nearby tractor. Glenn stepped closer and wanted to ask why he was doing it as Daryl poured the wine into the glasses, but as he looked at Daryl, the look in his eyes made him speechless. Something was there that he couldn't make sense of.
They drank a few glasses and when they didn't feel uncomfortable anymore, Daryl asked, "You wanted to ask something from someone before?"
Glenn looked at him straight in the eyes and Daryl could see the blush spreading on his face.
"Yeah. I wanted to ask you, if you, if you wanted to dance with me."
"Me?" Daryl looked at Glenn like he was joking.
"Yeah, but it's all over now, there's no music here," Glenn placed his hand on Daryl's shoulder lightly and Daryl felt relieved in a way.
No one was there but them, and Daryl grabbed Glenn's hand and pulled him into a hold. They stayed like that for a moment, Glenn still confused about the redneck holding him and feeling how close they were.
Glenn looked into his eyes again and he saw that everything was okay, that Daryl was serious about it. He changed his posture and placed his hand on Daryl's shoulder, and they danced.
"You're a good dancer," Glenn spoke in surprise, his voice shaken for how shy he felt in that moment and for Daryl not leaving him but only holding on tighter. They had yet a lot to learn from each other but that night they didn't need words.
A long while had passed with neither questioning the time but only holding onto each other as if never wanting to let go. The night was dark yet they weren't afraid. Daryl and Glenn stopped moving in unison and just stood there in the embrace of each other as they breathed the same air.
Glenn felt Daryl's hand up on his nape and the chills that followed made him shiver lightly under Daryl's gaze. Glenn couldn't look at Daryl in the eye, afraid that it'd make him leave. The redneck didn't move back but he moved his fingers through Glenn's black hair, rearranging it. "I like your hair messy."
Glenn clutched at the lapels of Daryl's coat and looked down between them, their bodies touching as if it was nothing new, as if it was how it belonged.
"I like your shirt dirty," Glenn answered, and they both smiled. The nature was quiet around them like they had entered another world where everyone was safe, everyone was alright.
"Glenn."
Glenn looked up at Daryl's sudden use of his name and found him looking back fondly. He wasn't expecting that. Neither was Daryl. But somehow it all felt so right.
It didn’t feel strange when they got closer to each other, as they looked into each other’s eyes as their faces were only inches apart. Daryl didn't care about how Glenn was and how he was, he just felt the need to touch his lips with his own, and he kissed him.
Glenn whimpered into the kiss, and as he closed his eyes, the whimper turned into a moan. He grasped at Daryl's coat even harder, wanting to pull him closer, to somewhere else in the world with him.
As Glenn caressed Daryl's face while the kiss deepened, he felt his thumbs get wet but he didn't want to confirm what he thought was true, he didn't want the kiss to end. Glenn started to cry as well in the cause of it. The world wasn't safe, nothing was certain, but he wanted him and only him, and Daryl finally knew it.
When they broke apart, gasping for air, Daryl groaned, "No one can never know."
Still holding him close, Glenn whispered back, "I know," and they kissed again.
They held each other tight in each other's arms, and that night was theirs alone.
