Every year Cinemateket arranges something called The 70mm Festival. It gives you a rare opportunity to experience epic classics the way they were supposed to be experienced. 70mm refers to the actual film format, the picture is 2.5 times larger than the regular 35mm film - which means you get a lot more details, popping colours, and the sound! It's a shame the only decent promo still I'm able to find for Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter (野良猫ロック セックス・ハンター) is a black and white photo. It shows off the badassery of the main character very well, but fails to capture the colourful 70's haze that this film is all wrapped up in.

The last three films I saw at FFS were From Up on Poppy Hill, Outrage Beyond, and Metropolis.

From Up on Poppy Hill was beautiful, very moving and sad, but uplifting and feel-good-y at the same time. Pretty much what we've come to expect from Ghibli films? The soundtrack was absolutely amazing as well. I can see why Marine Tower in Yokohama were ( Read more... )

FFS is soon over, but Cinemateket will continue on with a Nikkatsu retrospective in the week following the festival, so I'll still be spending a lot of my time at the cinema. I'm certainly not complaining.
