Derby 101 - Gearing Up

Sep 07, 2015 12:01

I've been back in Norway for two weeks now (though last weekend was spent in Helsinki, meeting awesome people from the internets~), and since I have yet to get the ball rolling with freelance translation gigs, I'll write about roller derby instead.

During my summer holiday, I signed up for roller derby 101 with Oslo Roller Derby, my local team ( Read more... )

It's so awesome that you're doing roller derby! I've always been interested in it but I never thought I'd be able to do it. Your gear looks so cool!

Thank you! I'm still sort of surprised that I'm actually doing it. I'm way out of my comfort zone (and sort of terrified that I'll seriously injure myself), but so far so good! AND IT'S SUCH A GOOD WORKOUT <3

AND YEAH, THE GEAR LOOKS SO COOL~~~ xD;;

Haha, I should have read my flist first before commenting on your comment. *lol*
I love the excitement that leaps off the screen from this entry! I think I mentioned it before that I have next to no idea about roller derby, other than two episodes of two TV shows, but it does sound like a cool and fun sport.

;D

Thanks! I'm just excited in general lately. So many changes and new things all around me, I just can't help but feeling more excited than usual.

AND DON'T WORRY. I'll probably post a lot about derby the coming months, and some of it is bound to be about rules and what the game is all about. I need to be an NSO (non-skating official) at three scrimmages (practice games) to pass the course, and I need to really know all the rules to be able to do that well, so... I have some studying to do. The girls on the main team (who get to do scrimmages), are intidimating as fuck, so I'm really nervous about my NSO duties... XD;;;;

So, you are kind of my hero. I'm terrified of any contact-like sport these days (who am I kidding, I was always scared of most sports, now I just also know I'm a delicate flower that breaks often, so even leaving my house is an event fraught with peril) but I 100% plan to live vicariously through you!! Please post often about this, LOL.

Not gonna lie, I'm sort of terrified about hurting myself. I mean, it's a contact sport, and you're rolling around on heavy things that can't be stopped unless you know the proper technique.. so.. like. I feel injuries are just bound to happen. :S Right now just going through the basics. No contact yet! Just... learning how to roll around safely. I'll post more about this laterrrrrr, yup :D I want to keep a journal of my progress!

If I can offer any random, unsolicited advice, I would recommend getting your blood drawn to check your levels and such, up your iron and calcium intake a bit (if it isn't already high) and maybe potassium to discourage broken bones, fractures, or intense bruises :D
