On Religion

I officially opted out of the Norwegian church a couple of years ago, and I'm now thrilled to learn that we're finally separating state and church. We've had state religion in Norway for about 500 years, and next week that comes to an end. People will no longer be forced into Christianity at birth, Confirmation will no longer be an obligatory part ( Read more... )

Yay secular state, woot.

On the other hand, I have never experienced what you describe here. I never felt forced into Christianity or to do the Christian Confirmation or anything. I had a secular confirmation and most of my friends either did that or they had none at all. The only time were I was like ffs, was when it was still called Christianity in school. But now it's called Religion and they teach other religions too.

That is very wonderful news! When I live in Austria if we put down a religion they would take money out of the paycheck to give to the nearest church that was that religion. I always found that, icky.

As an aside, since I am studying Islam (because where i live) but some Muslims believe everyone is born Muslim but our parents force us into whatever their religion is. Which is why some who convert call themselves reverts instead.
