Those quotes are intriguing! This one is my favourite:
* 'Things aren't what they used to be' is the rallying cry of small minds. When men say things used to be better, they invariably mean they were better for them, because they were young, and had all their hopes intact. The world is bound to look a darker place as you slide into the grave. - Nicomo Cosca
You got me interested in the book now! I'm going to take a look at it and perhaps get it when I've finished all the books I'm reading currently.
I'm afraid I've never even heard of the books in your poll (I fail at book knowledge, because I don't even know who the authors are and if they're super popular or not!), but if you want to read a good fantasy book, my recommendation is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I haven't even finished the book yet, but it's really, really well written, extremely captivating from page one, and very highly rated everywhere online (not that that says much BUT my word PLUS that says a lot! ;D lmao).
I can't comment on any of the books or authors that you mentioned... I've never heard of any of them :/
All I can say is this: I absolutely loved The Scar. I can't wait to finish the book I'm currently forcing myself through (Dune Messiah) so that I can buy another China Miéville book.
Also, I think I'm going to have to use some of my holiday time this Christmas to blast may way through some of the books on my bookshelf that are partially or wholly unread. That is, if various Legend of Zelda games don't get in the way (same problem).
