That little face in the D cracks me up, for some reason!
There are some pretty *dark* animated films out there, that are wholly inappropriate for children under 15. The most disturbing animation I've seen, has to be the atom bomb scene from Barefoot Gen. I haven't watched The Grave of the Fireflies, but that one is also reported to have a pretty traumatic effect on younger viewers.
I had an idea once, about making up hideously funny concepts for inappropriate children's entertainment. But I'm not sure what the medium would be. Are you going to be making more "failed adaptions?"
There definitely are films out there that are not OK for kids! But amongst western animation studios, it's practically impossible to get them produced, because feature-quality animation is expected to be so glossy that it costs hundreds of millions of dollars. Anyone who invests that kind of money in a film wants to be sure of its paying out, so they have to play it super safe: given the people paying money for your film are predominantly parents of children looking for something to keep little Mackenzie happy on a long car trip, and not give her nightmares, there are very narrow parameters for what's acceptable. This only seems to be getting worse as consumption of films moves from family trips to the cinema to individuals watching on portable devices.
Grave of the Fireflies is an absolutely fantastic film that is definitely worth seeing ... once ... I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone, but I'd have to be very prepared to see it again! Japan is very good for 'grown up' animated films, but they have an entirely different
