The other night we were having drinks with some acquaintances in town from NYC. They're a married couple, a lot older than us, super rich, smart, and they're Republican. Registered to vote in Florida

I thought you said they were smart.

that's what scares me!

I should put in a caveat that I know him better than i know her; he's a co-worker. He is definitely smart, she I'm no sure about.

But, it's also clear from the conversation that she was basically re-iterating his speaking points. She used to be a Democrat until she married him.

I've known plenty of Republicans who I would consider to be well-educated, and some of them are undoubtedly accomplished intellectuals. But I'm not sure I could ever describe someone who sincerely thought eight years of Bush/Cheney (or another four years of McCain/Palin) was a good idea as "smart".
