(Hey, I'd take crazy over the slapstick route any day.)
Actually, speaking of, have you seen 'Bad Day at Black Rock' yet? Because, yes, it's slapstick, and slapstick usually doesn't amuse me at all, but somehow it manages to be one of my favourite episodes of anything ever. I think it's Sam's expressions that do it.
I have (today I get to watch 'Bedtime Stories')! And, yeah, slapstick usually manages to annoy me, but that was hilarious. (I finally understand why one million people have icons of Sam looking down woefully, sometimes with text about a shoe!) I haven't been able to entirely figure out why it worked so well, but you may be right about the expressions.
IF I MAY EXPLAIN (hoo boy here I go), he's interesting because he's not trying to be a sympathetic villain at all. He's just so utterly evil, and so viscerally horrifying, and he takes such obvious glee in being so that you kind of have be entertained because the only other option is to be appalled (which is, in its way, the basis of a lot of humour). And the fact that we never get an explanation for just what the hell is wrong with him (and indeed he openly derides the idea that anyone could ever figure him out) means it could have been anything that made him that way. It could be something he...just decided to be, a sort of counterpoint to Batman's deciding to be a hero. Or since whatever broke him like that could be anything - then anything could turn anyone into him. Into that. (It's like gravity...all it takes is a little push. Ah hahaha, HA HA HA HA HA HA, AHAAAH HAAAH HAAA

The weird thing is, I did find him entertaining, but, I dunno, I still feel like I walked out missing some crucial aspect of the story, but I just can't put my finger on what, just that the Joker was involved in it somehow (and, hey, it may be my useless memory making my life difficult again, I don't know), and because of that, I'm not getting why everyone thought he was so beyond great ... Though, actually, that's a really good point. He is suddenly far more interesting if I think of him more as a force of chaos/trickster... hmm...
Oh, goodness, no. I never shut up, so I don't mind at all when people go on and on about... well, anything at all, but especially when it's meta and especially when it's something I don't feel I "get" entirely.
Oh! Well...I can't say what you missed since I can't read your mind (yet, anyway), but yeah, the Joker isn't necessarily supposed to be a character like Bats or Harvey. He's more like chaos given physical form to counter Batman and his crusade to clean up Gotham. Like the bloodier counterpart to a character like Bugs Bunny. That's why he seems to sort of pop up from nowhere as though he coalesced from the smog for the sole purpose of fucking with everybody. Like the universe saw Batman, with his Rules and his Mission, and said, "Okay, you wanna clean up the world? Let's make sure the world puts up a fight. Let's see how far you'll take your rules. He who fights monsters and all that."
...Which is why I am kind of mildly weirded out by the people who have crushes on the Joker. IT MAKES PERFECT SENSE TO HAVE A CRUSH ON THE ABYSS THAT GAZES ALSO INTO YOU. PERFECT SENSE. I BET HE'D BE A WONDERFUL BOYFRIEND WHAT WITH ATTEMPTING TO BURN THE ENTIRE WORLD SO HE CAN DANCE THE TWIST IN THE ASHES

Yeah, that's what they all claim. I know better. It's because I wear a mind-reader-blocking hat. ... Anyway, um, yes! I think I'm going to have to rewatch it now. XD I usually do better with things on a smaller screen, anyway, when the sound isn't cranked up to Wake The Dead And Kill The Living. (Plus, I really want to see how thinking of the Joker more like this affects how everything comes across.)
HE DOESN'T REALLY WANT TO HURT ANYONE! He just wants a hug~~ :(((((? Come on, we all heard his speech there towards the end. HUGZ!! oh god no don't kill me. no. no! noooaguughggkmj--
Yeah - I really liked how they handled Harvey's story, even if I do make fun of it. (It's probably bad that I spend a lot of energy making fun of things I like while completely ignoring the majority of things I don't, isn't it?) It is too bad no one could see the I AM SO DEAD stamp on her forehead, though... Probably would have helped a lot.
