Derek didn't know which way to turn. There was safety in numbers but not with the sudden Marvel comic occurrences happening at the boarding house. As it stood, he was relatively sure that people were tired of their shit being broken. He was tired of breaking them ( ... )

At the sound of the footsteps approaching, Ziva's hand had shot to her holster, only to find it no longer on her hip. She had frowned at that. She did not need weapons to defend herself, but her gun, or even her knives, made things a whole lot easier.

Cautiously, she turned to see who it was that had spoken to her, and her gaze was wary as it swept over the stranger, surveying him and the scene.

"I am not sure, actually," she said, not seeing any harm in admitting that much. She wondered if he too was a captive here, assumed he almost had to be. What person in their sane mind would be here willingly? Besides, he seemed to be just as leery of her as she of him. "I only just got here."

She looked around. "Where is here, exactly? I am not familiar with a place called Peaksville anywhere near D.C."

Fresh meat. Derek noticed how the woman reached for her side. West seemed to have a thing for law enforcement types. Even with Captain Kirk around, there weren't any known--Morgan couldn't believe what he was actually thinking but--'villains' in Peaksville. Those appeared to be left up to West and company.

With a cautious gaze still intently observing, he extended his hand in greeting. This would the first that he would simply hold it out and allow the woman to grip his hand instead of possibly breaking hers. "Derek Morgan. And this..." He allowed the word to hang for emphasis. "...is a nightmare. Or at least that's what I tell myself most days."

There was faux comfort in the mention of D.C. that lasted about as long as it took to respond. Morgan gazed with friendly eyes, assessing that he wasn't in immediate danger. "I've been across the country a few times and have actually been to a Peaksville once or twice. I can tell you with absolute certainty that this limbo isn't any town in or around the States. Especially around Capitol ( ... )

Ziva eyed his hand for a moment before shaking it, deciding that he, that Derek, was not a threat. At least, not at the moment. If things changed, then so would she ( ... )

Ziva was not put off by his tease. She seemed to welcome the flirting. He was always one to get a rise when someone played along with him. Derek couldn't rid the smile from his lips even as he chewed a bite of steak.

His brow darted up in playful agreement at her synopsis of a good combination between brains and brawn. The fog of uncertainty that he had felt over the past day (not seeing or hearing from Deb) had vanished. Ziva also appeared relaxed. His guard was down quickly for having just met her.

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," he concurred with her statement about fun. "I do a few different things. Work out. Renovate properties. Hit a club. Hit a bar. Watch a game. Play video games..." Derek took a sip of beer while looking thoughtful. "Flirt," he concluded with an impish grin. "How about you?"

It appeared that they had much in common and she gave a knowing nod at his list of activities, sipping and munching. Her salad was all but gone and she had finally started on her steak. Not her best, but good enough ( ... )

Derek worked on his steak while Ziva had the floor. His eyes only left her for a glance at his food to make sure didn't finish off the plate in the process. It wasn't a surprise that she didn't have an affinity for video games, but he wondered if he heard her correctly about the rest ( ... )
