And for that, Jim was glad. He nodded as he closed the door, recognizing Michael. It was better to do things in pairs--ironic, given the force that kept tying them to other people without their wanting it.

"I'm sure we'll find her," he said as they started walking. "Hopefully she'll have holed up somewhere safe. Do you have any idea where she might be now?"

"I hope you're right," he said. He knew people said things like that all the time, but he could tell that Jim was serious about helping, and that meant a lot to him. He wasn't going to explain what Fiona was to him. He couldn't.

"No, no idea. I'm...still learning my way around to be honest."

It didn't matter what Fiona was to Michael--Jim could see he cared, and even without that she was a stranger and a victim here. He would help.

"That's understandable," he nodded. "We'll go to the square, where you saw her last, right? And go from there."

He nodded down the street, and they started off.

Michael nodded. "Sounds good." He let out a breath and fell into step with Jim as they walked.

He was quiet for awhile before speaking up. "So...how long have you been here?"
