Most would clamor to say that they just don't believe it, until the professor* requested quiet to gently tell the author, "Rewrite, and let us see it again next week

Very, very good points. I think a lot got lost in this discussion because the author was not willing to listen to criticism when it comes to character motivation. I noticed she had quite a few reviews suggesting she go into professional writing. I'd be interested to see what happens there if she tries.

Me, too. If she can't take criticism, there's no way she'll be able to handle editor reactions. Particularly because most of the editors will read about a chapter then toss it to the side and write the "Thank you for submitting your work to us. Unfortunately, we do not have blah blah blah" form letter. If the work did get past that point, then she'd have to be ready for some very upfront, honest, and non-flowery criticisms of her work and what needs to be changed.
