note: i watched "오늘밤만 재워줘" last night and fell in love with donghae and things just happened.

donghae ruins everything he touches. he's known about it long before he came to seoul to audition to sing and dance, known about it long before they talk about it on tv. he's eight the first time he pets the neighbor's dog and it makes a little snuffling sound and pats away. the next day they tell him the dog is dead. he's twelve when he goes over to his best friend's house and shakes his father's hand and his friend doesn't come to school for two weeks because his dad gets cancer. donghae lasts eight years without touching anyone, riding buses with his hands tucked into his jeans and hugging friends with gloves on until one day he meets a boy with a wide wide smile and jeans too big for his non-existant hips and he has to touch. two years later, donghae watches hyukjae stuggle home from another failed audition, another dream lost because of his left knee that never moves right anymore and wishes he'd never ever touched. he settles for slamming his hands against the concrete of his apartment stairs until his fingers are fragments of bones and blood. three years laster, donghae can't even put his clothes on by himself anymore, but hyukjae dances flawlessly on stage in a country far away surrounded by screaming girls and he knows it was worth it.

when donghae cries and pleads for the group to listen, they always do. they swallow him in hugs and kisses on the cheek until he's only sniffling, and then it's donghee's job to pull him into the corner and catch the drying tears on his cheeks with his fingers and kiss him until he's smiling and laughing again.

donghae tries and tries to be funny. not the kind of funny that comes with misunderstanding english or embarrasing himself in ballet outfits or hitting eunhyuk, but the kind of quick witted funny that the other members seem to do so well. he tries and tries to evaluate and disect and never realizes that he's funniest when he doesn't try so hard. leeteuk only smiles and shakes his head and lets donghae try and realize that on his own.

"iloveyouiloveyouiloveyou" donghae cries into his shoulder, fingers clenched tight into the fabric of his shirt, and jungsu can't do anything but hold him tight, hold him close. he knows that these "iloveyou"s aren't for him, not this time, and when donghae finally falls asleep, still holding tight onto him, jungsu remembers a promise he made to a man with the deepest and clearest eyes he'd ever seen, a promise to a man who'd passed on his reflection and his talent and his heart to his son, who worked everyday to be just a little bit like the man his father should've had a chance to be.
