Elizabeth fell into the stance quickly, placing one hand on Gaston's shoulder and the other in his. She allowed him to lead, but took control of the conversation.

"Veiled comments never did suit you," she replied. "It would be much easier for the both of us if you were to just remain blunt, don't you think?"

Gaston had never been one to mince words, a trait Elizabeth was quite aware of and used to at this point. On the rare occasion he was vague, it made Elizabeth highly uncomfortable.

He nearly wanted to laugh at her. Yes, he was a deathly blunt person, but when someone laced words with him, he laced them right back..

“Alright then, Eliza. He’s rather pathetic.” Gaston smiled charmingly regardless of his choice of words. “A bit soft, nothing less of what you like now, I guess?”

They danced to the music and he could sense the eyes of many on him and her. A natural occurrence, and probably a little more aware since it had been ages since they were seen together like this. He mildly wondered if his father was aware.

Elizabeth bit back a sigh and rolled her eyes. She should have known that Gaston would pass judgment like this so quickly on someone he'd never met before. She could almost assume that he'd never change, but she always held just a sliver of hope in her heart for him.

"You would know this from what - four words between the two of you? He's captain of the fencing team, besides, who I believe are doing better this year than the football team, are they not?" For once, Elizabeth was glad she had to cover sports for the paper.

"At any rate, my choice in date could never be as dreadful as yours seems to have become. All those giggling blondes? You might as well've just brought a glorified girl's doll."

He laughed. Oh this was the sort of bicker he lived for with her now.

“Judging people is easy, you should know that.” He commented, “And fencing is in an entirely different class than actual sports, Foot ball isn’t some poking of sticks.”

Her sharp tongue was always a challenge. It was what made him bubble with anger at her comments towards him, but at the same time it somehow would seem dull otherwise. “Those girls are disposable. Much like most of the girls I’ve dated.” He said, giving her a look of seriousness.

Will had made casual conversation with Norrington for a certain amount of time, before he had decided he had better check back on Elizabeth, lest she thought he had forgotten, and abandonned her to Gaston. Not that he really thought she would think that, but still.

He wormed his way into the dancing crowd now, trying to look for his blonde object of infatuation and their debonair host. When he didn't spot them immediately, it occurred to him that they might have ended the dance already. But just as he turned to back out off the dancefloor, he spotted Elizabeth and Gaston to his right. A slight frown creasing his features, Will headed towards them. That had to be more than just one dance, he thought. But then again, he was no expert on dance, so how was he to know?

Not immediately realising how strange he must have looked standing by himself in the middle of the dance floor like that, Will hovered around the dancing duo, not particularly daring to cut in, yet wanting to let Elizabeth know he was waiting right there for her; would ( ... )

The song came to an end and Gaston didn’t say anything more. His nerves were coming to a short, even if he had started this conversation so well. He glanced to the side to see William hovering about and waiting. He wanted to smile at him and hold Elizabeth close, but instead he only snorted conceitedly.

“Well. Go back to your puppy, Eliza. Thank you for the dance.” He said smugly, as he let her go. He was quick to kiss her hand and made off on his way.

Out towards the back of the hall, to get some fresh air.

Watching Gaston walk away, Elizabeth stood there, looking absolutely dumbfounded. If she were to speak figuratively, she felt as if he had just slapped her in the face. Giving her that line and then trotting off. Who the bloody hell did he think he was, exactly?

Of course, this meant there was something much deeper going on than she had originally assumed. It didn't help her feel any better about what had just happened, though. It also didn't make her look any better, him just walking off on his own and leaving her there, alone on the edges of the dance floor.

Will had noticed the closing strands of melody, as the band played its final note for this round of the dance. This had prompted him to move closer to the pair, intent on claiming his date back. He was just as stunned as Elizabeth was when Gaston suddenly upped and left her standing alone on the dance floor.

Will wasn't the expert on this, but wasn't that a very ungentlemanly thing to do - to just leave your partner standing there, the moment the dance ended? From the expression on her face, Elizabeth felt the same way too. She looked distinctly offended, and Will walked tentatively towards her, wondering if he should instead be running after Gaston and pummeling him, for not returning Elizabeth right back to his side like the proper Gentleman would do.

"Elizabeth?" He asked inquiringly, "What happened? Should I go after him?"
