Oh wow, that was great. The narrative styling was lovely and the last line just perfect. An excellent read all round.

Thanks. When I write about two guys it gets confusing to know who I'm referring to when I write "he" for both of them. "You" works better and makes Hephaistion's thoughts more intimate. =D

I have heard that the name "Hephaistion" was kind of Athenian.

Yes...I think that's what Renault said at her endnotes, too.

Alexander has never known you.

you know, while reading books about Alexander, and so on, I started having a weird feeling... and it was pretty like, "Hephaistion knew him. Hephaistion was listening to his dreams and was cradling them, he was their keeper. but what of Hephaistion's own dreams? was it enough for him to love Alexander, watchin him crave for somthing different? was it enough to tell himself 'I am him' and then spend two, three months without a sign from him, with nothing concrete to hold on to?
and then I thought, even Alexander was cheated. because he discovered that there was a par of him which could die. and die Hephaistion did; it was then, I guess, that Alexander understood. maybe Hephaistin never had the chance. Hephaistion died alone, and I'm sure that it was what he was expecting. he always knew he would die this way."
I have toadmit your fic really touched me. it describes really well a bitter feeling which Hephaistion probably really had.
I loved it.
thanks for sharing.

Well said and agreed.

Brilliant bloody fic.

I personally don't think Hephaistion would remain alone for "two, three months" as far as Alexander was around. Roxane and Barsine got pregnant only after Hephaistion left Alexander for a long time to accomplish some mission. Alexander did show his favor to Bagoas, for instance, to give him a villa, to kill someone that Bagoas hated and accused of treason. But no such things happened when Hephasition was alive. Who was/were neglected by Alexander? As to this matter, everyone can draw his own judgement ( ... )

Very touching fic, I love every detail of it. You managed to make it very bitter but without overdoing it, just - perfect.

You squint your eyes and brush tenderly over the blister of one dusty toe and think: "I don't need the world."
So true. Poor Hephaistion...

Thanks! The line you quoted is one of my favorites. The imagery for it was very vivid in my mind.
