Could it be Angstosaur's trilogy - Magwitch, Queen Takes Knight's Pawn and Checkmate? I read these fics a long while ago, so not too sure about the Red Queen reference..

No, I don't think those are it. I think his mother was head of an organization. Sigh. Maybe its bookmarked on one of my old computers.

Yes, this was it. Had red mixed up with other colors but she was very much like a queen. The chess/cards impression came from another story. Thanks.
